There’s something almost sacred about our National Parks.
The hush of pines in the high country. The silence at the canyon rim. Even the names—Olympic, Shenandoah, Grand Canyon—carry weight, history, and wonder.
For one young man, it wasn’t just a dream to visit; the adventure of starting a dream job in the rugged wilderness was his reality.
He had secured a position with the National Park Service and came to Arizona ready to work, hopeful and determined.
Just as he arrived to start working, the rug was pulled out from under him.
Federal budget cuts cascaded through the system, and his job was gone.
The promise of housing that came with it? Gone too.
Still clinging to what remained, he drove to Phoenix. And there, his car gave out. No income. No shelter. No transportation.
Still, he didn’t quit. He kept going. After several long months of homelessness, he connected with the Keys to Change Outreach team.
And then, a door cracked open. A new job offer came in. Another National Park—this time in the Four Corners region of Colorado.
It offered a paycheck. Housing. A way forward. But there was a catch: he had to report to work in two days. No ride. No resources. No time for delay.
That’s when the Outreach Team at Keys to Change stepped in.
The team filled the outreach vehicle with gas, packed some snacks, and hit the road.
Eleven hours. Three states. One young man, delivered to a new beginning.
They got him there, got him settled, then turned around and came back home.
