Musical Medicine: Dementia relief through
"MORE LOVE (Karleigh's Song)"
|
|
|
We received this incredibly inspiring and heartwarming note yesterday from my friend Penny White, songleader extraordinaire,
producer, educator,
and community convener:
"The other night we were at dinner at the home of
a dear friend and her sister, and their
elderly mom
who is in
the advanced stages of dementia.
The whole family is very musical,
but the mom is now largely non-verbal.
After dinner
we started singing some songs around the table,
and I had this sudden strong desire
for them to hear
your song
'More Love (Karleigh's Song)'.
We found your YouTube home-studio version
with Ashley Jo singing. Our friends were very moved, and loved it.
But the most wondrous thing was the reaction of their
mom, who is usually quite withdrawn.
We looked over and she was leaning forward in her chair with
her hands over her heart, listening and watching
the
v
ideo so intently, and by the second chorus,
she was SINGING ALONG!!!!!!
We were all stunned! When the song ended
she gave a big sigh and a little smile,
sat back in her chair
and said, 'Beautiful... beautiful.'
Your incredible songs and performances touch thousands of people and I know you know that. But on that night, in a tiny living room in Asheville NC, 'More Love' brought more peace and joy and love and connection to a mother and her daughters than they ever dreamed possible.
With love and gratitude,
-Penny"

This Father’s Day weekend, the Better Dads Festival will create an active, soulful, inspirational, fun, and educational space for the Asheville community to explore and celebrate fatherhood. The event welcomes people of all ages from Asheville’s diverse communities. Live music, dance, games, costumes, drumming, storytelling, crafts, poetry, and a dress-your-dad photo booth will provide opportunities to play together. Community speakers and resource booths will invite festival-goers to explore how men show up in their lives, the challenges they face, and new possibilities. For those seeking deeper connection, there will be sharing circles.
The musical lineup will include acclaimed local artists LYRIC (who performs with her father), David LaMotte, David Wilcox, and the Billy Jonas Band.
