Pride on a student's face after completing a handwork project

Dear Mountain Song Families,

Today marks the final day of CMAS testing for our amazing 3rd through 5th grade students—and we couldn’t be prouder of them!

They’ve approached this week with calm, confidence, and focus. At Mountain Song, we often talk about how handwork teaches patience, perseverance, and the ability to work through challenges stitch by stitch. We believe those same qualities help our students navigate moments like state testing with grace and resilience.

CMAS is just one way we gather information to understand where students are thriving and where we can offer more support—both individually and school-wide. It’s not something to stress about, but rather a tool to help us grow.

A good night’s sleep, a solid breakfast, and a positive attitude have made all the difference—and we’re grateful to our teachers and families for supporting our students every step of the way.

Next up: CMAS testing for grades 6–8 will take place April 16–18.

Let’s keep cheering each other on!

Mr. Nate Mylin

Director of Education

Mountain Song Community School

Welcome Ms. Splees!

We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Regina Splees Tafoya to the MSCS family, where she will help wrap up the Magnolia Class' first grade year! Ms. Tafoya brings a deep passion for inspiring curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning in young children.

She is an experienced educator with over a decade of teaching in Japan, Maui, and Colorado. Her journey began with Montessori certification, and she has pursued various trainings, including Waldorf methods, nonviolent communication, and restorative justice.

She has worked in a variety of educational settings—designing engaging curricula, fostering strong classroom communities, and helping children build confidence and independence. Her approach blends tradition and innovation, ensuring every child feels supported, challenged, and excited to come to school each day.

Regina founded the Gateway International Center in Kanagawa, Japan, known for its unique curriculum that blends Living Values Education and nonviolent communication. She holds a degree in Communications and Art from Grand Canyon University, where she focused on photography and played on the NAIA champion tennis team.

Beyond the classroom, she loves exploring the outdoors—skiing and hiking in the Rockies with her dog—or crafting new wonder questions to spark children’s imaginations.

If you see her around, be sure to say hi!

We’re Hiring: Gifted Education & Library Assistant

Mountain Song is looking for a passionate and organized individual to join our team in a unique, full-time role that supports both gifted learners and our school library.

This position helps identify and support students who qualify—or are close to qualifying—for gifted services, develops Advanced Learning Plans (ALPs), and offers enrichment opportunities like Math Club and Battle of the Books.

The role also manages our school library—keeping things organized, supporting student visits, and helping teachers make the most of our library resources.

If you or someone you know has a love for learning, literacy, and supporting students in a variety of ways!

Battle of the Books!

April 17th

Battle of the Books is fast approaching! This is an exciting reading competition where 5th grade students dive into a list of pre-selected books, then team up to answer detailed questions in a quiz-show-style battle. It’s a fun and challenging way to boost reading skills, teamwork, and a love for great stories!

Our Mountain Song 5th graders have been working hard—reading, discussing, and preparing for weeks. We’re so proud of their dedication and can’t wait to see them shine in the upcoming competition on April 17th!

5th Grade Pentathlon: A Rite of Passage

April 24th

Our 5th grade students are preparing for a very special event—the Pentathlon! This cherished Waldorf tradition brings together students from Waldorf-inspired schools across Colorado to compete in events inspired by the ancient Greek games.

Throughout the day, students demonstrate strength, grace, and sportsmanship in five events: javelin, discus, long jump, wrestling, and a foot race. It’s a celebration of courage, balance, and the unique gifts each student brings.

The Pentathlon marks an important rite of passage in the Waldorf journey, and we’re so excited for our 5th graders! To send them off in true Mountain Song fashion, the entire school will be making posters and lining up to cheer them on before they head out on their journey.

May Faire is Coming

It Counts as a School Day!

Mark your calendars—our beloved May Faire celebration is right around the corner! This joyful event is a highlight of the year at Mountain Song, full of music, movement, and magic.

A gentle reminder: May Faire is an official school day (so that we don't have to extend the school year) so attendance is required. Parents, you are still required to supervise your child(ren). This also allows every student to experience this fun event as well as providing leadership opportunities for our older students!

This beautiful tradition truly takes a village. Keep an eye out for volunteer sign-ups from your child’s teacher to see how you can help bring the celebration to life.

As always, we invite everyone to wear white as we welcome the season of renewal and joy—together. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!

Calling All Makers, Artists, and Doers!

We’re gearing up for another unforgettable May Faire Silent Auction—one of our biggest fundraisers of the year—and we need your help to make it shine!

Every year, we’re blown away by the incredible talents in our MSCS community—artists, entrepreneurs, bakers, builders, crafters, and creators of all kinds. If you have a skill, product, service, event tickets, or even a vacation home you’d be willing to donate, we’d love to include it in this year’s auction.

Included in this year's silent auction, we have...

  • 3 private (or small group) 1 hr yoga sessions
  • A day at the Denver Children's Museum for two kids with Ms. Hannah!
  • A reading of one of the most elusive dialogues from the works of Plato followed by the chance to shave Mr Kalinske’s head!

Thank you for sharing your gifts and helping us make this year's May Faire one to remember!

Best Grant Updates

As you may know, Mountain Song has been awarded over $10 million in funding through the Colorado Department of Education’s BEST Grant! This grant will allow us to make significant improvements to our school facilities—enhancements that will benefit our students and school community for years to come.

As we move closer to the start of construction, we want to keep you informed and help set expectations.

Here’s what you should know...

  • Fencing will go up shortly after May Faire
  • Construction will begin after the end of the school year
  • There will be noise, dust, and temporary disruptions to normal routines

We know that construction may bring a few inconveniences, but we are confident that these upgrades will have a positive and lasting impact on our learning environment.

Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and continued support as we begin this exciting new chapter for our school.

If you have any questions, please contact our Director of Operations, Brian Honeycutt.

Enrollment for SY2025/26

1st Grade Watercolor Art

Thinking about Mountain Song for 2025-2026?

We’re already seeing waitlists in almost every grade for next school year! If you feel like MSCS could be the right fit for your child, we encourage prospective families to fill out the Intent to Enroll (or Homeschool Intent to Enroll) form sooner rather than later to secure a spot on the list.

Current families—if you haven’t submitted your Save My Seat form yet, please don’t wait! It’s incredibly important for us to know how many students are returning so we can plan class sizes, staffing, and resources for next year. Thanks for helping us get a clear picture for the 2025–2026 school year!

Curious to learn more about what makes Mountain Song special? We’d love to show you around—join us for a school tour on April 24th!
