Medical Careers Academy
One of the academic pillar programs of Sonora High School is our Academy of Nursing and Medical Careers. Freshmen will take Introduction to Medical Careers and Nursing. Sophomores take Health and Medical Office. If students also have the opportunity to earn concurrent credit during this course. Yes, transferrable college credits may be earned during only their second year in the program. The third and fourth year of the program is because of the strong partnership between Fullerton Joint Union High School District and the North Orange County Regional Occupational Program (ROP). Students take Body Systems as Juniors and Medical Assistant during their Senior Year. The final yearsof the pathway offer students externships.

Pictured here you will see our newest addition to the pathway, our Anamotage Table. This is the most technologically advanced anatomy visualization system. It is both a virtual library of human and animal cadavers, as well as a clinical diagnostic tool by visualization of any Medical CT, CBCT, or MRI scan. This is an interactive hands-on tool that the students will be able to have hands-on experiences. There is a competition with the interactivity of this table for students at Future Health Professions, formerly known as Health Occupation Student of America or HOSA conferences. There were only four in Southern California, now there are five.

If you would like more information about the Medical Pathway, please contact Mr. Witt at [email protected].

Exemplar Lesson of the Week
This week students completed a Hybrid Interactive Enzyme lab in IB Biology HL with Mrs. Bawaney. Enzymes create chemical reactions in the body. They actually speed up the rate of a chemical reaction to help support life. The enzymes in your body help to perform very important tasks. These include building muscle, destroying toxins, and breaking down food particles during digestion. Students chose how they wanted to demonstrate the breakdown of food(s) in their groups of four. Students were in groups of four or more. While one person was in-person in the lab performing the task(s), the students in the other Cohorts were recording the data in real-time. The questions that came from the students online or the ones in-person were absolutely amazing to witness. One of our Raiders was so inspired by the lab that they composed an enzyme song that she performed. Great job IB Bio students and Mrs. Bawaney!!

Meet Mr. Atkins
I am honored and humbled to be selected by the Sonora Community, the Fullerton Joint Union High School District (FJUHSD) Cabinet, Dr. Scambray, our Superintendent, and the FJUHSD Board of Trustees to serve as Principal of Sonora High School. I have been serving in education since 1999 and until now I have only dreamed of such an opportunity. My grandparents told me, "Get all of the education that you can because when I was your age I did not have the same opportunities." They also told me "Do as much as you can for as many as you can for as long as you can." I took those lessons and became the first in my family to graduate from a four-year college Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Art's Degree in History and obtain a Master's Degree in School Administration. I believe that anyone can achieve their dreams and it is my job to do as much as I can to help them get there. My career has given me the opportunity to serve in Virginia Beach, San Bernardino, Fontana, Santa Maria, Lake Elsinore, and ultimately Fullerton. The combination of my family's lessons in life along with my twenty-plus years of experience in various school districts gives me unique perspectives on how to effectively lead Sonora High School now and into the future.

Here are ten little known facts that will help us become better acquainted:
Where did you grow up? I grew up in Virginia Beach, VA. I came to California in 2004.
What do you like to do in your free time? I like to bike ride with my son, James, who is six, or my daughter, who is 19, currently in college at Texas Tech.
Why did you go into education? The importance that my family placed on education and giving unto others.
What keeps you in education? Helping others (staff and students) reveal the full academic/instructional potential that, in many cases, is hidden inside of them.
What is one odd thing about you? I do not like avocados or guacamole (It might be a southern thing. This is how you really know I am not native to California.)
What is your favorite sport's team? DALLAS COWBOYS (Do not laugh)
Who is your most influential person in your life? It would be a 6-way tie between my four grandparents, to whom I was/am close to, and my parents. They all worked so hard and sacrificed so much to give me the opportunities that they did not have. I can see aspects of each of them in my daily activities.
Did you play any sports when you were in high school? Football (DB/safety). I played trumpet in the band too.
What is your favorite dessert? A warm slice of sweet potato pie or warm slice of pound cake with icecream, or oatmeal raisin cookies. Any of that with a glass of sweet tea...yummm. You can take the boy out of the country, but you cannot take the country out of the boy.
What is your favorite quote? 1 John 4:11, "Since God so loved us, then we should love each other." This was my senior year quote from high school too.

If there is ever anything that I can do for you, then please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected].
