Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served and continue to serve in the United States Armed Forces. This holiday started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country's service and was originally called Armistice Day. It fell on November 11th because that is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. However, in 1954, the holiday was changed to "Veterans Day" in order to account for all veterans in all wars. Sonora High School unites with others around this great nation as we celebrate, honor, and thank America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. In the picture above is the Sonora's JROTC Color Guard (Left to right - Isabella Garcia, Brandon Garcia, Jolene Guadalquivir, Jone Higuchi, Rear - Justin Ellis). We were filmed on October 28, 2020 by the City of La Haba for their annual Veterans Day program that will honor its Veterans and those who continue to serve with a virtual program that will be broadcast on the Recreation Division Facebook page. The event will take place on November 11, 2020, from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM. We will resume with Cohort A again on Thursday, November 12, 2020. FJUHSD Readiness Our District has taken the lead in preparing our students and staff to return to our campuses safely. Our Board has appointed a new COVID Adminsistrator, Manuel Macias. He has been responsible for articulating and coordinating all COVID efforts among the seven school sites across the District. ASB Weekly Announcements FJUHSD Food Services Our District Food Service has done an excellent job in preparing for Hybrid Learning as well. They have focused on operating in more areas on our campus (to reduce students congregating in one area), while adding mobilized carts , and serving in our school parking lot for our Grab & Go meal services. The mobilized carts will not be operating in the parking lot at the end of the school day (to avoid after school traffic). All meals will continue to be served in grab bags (for easy distribution). Free meal waiver has now been extended through the end of the school year (June 30th). Please click here to apply for the free meal waiver: Lunch Application. There have been directional arrows and social distancing signs drawn and placed on the floor (inside/outside the cafeteria and snack bar as applicable). Tables in and near, the cafeteria have all been closed off by tape or boards to encourage social distancing. Plexiglass has been installed in all kitchen serving areas. And all food service employees will be required to wear all appropriate PPE supplies (disposable facial coverings, gloves, and aprons). Sonora's Rotary Student of the Month Each month the La Habra Rotary Club and Sonora High School join together to honor one outstanding student for his or her achievements. This month we are proud to announce Yena Suh as our November Student of the Month as we honor our Top Student in a Program. Yena is a Sonora Senior and one of our 41 full-IB Candidates. Yena proudly serves as an Executive Officer of our Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) which places her 2nd in Command of the entire Battalion. Yena is the recipient of the highest academic JROTC award, the Distinguished Cadet Ribbon. This talented young lady placed first in the Sons of the American Revolution Enhanced JROTC Medal Competition for the Orange County Chapter and placed 2nd in the State of California. Yena is the recipient of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Medal, American Legion Scholastic Medal, and the Military Officer Association Medal. She is the recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award (Gold) and was a key leader that assisted the JROTC program in retaining its Honor Unit with Distinction during the triennial JROTC Program of Accreditation last year. Yena was Captain of the JROTC Leadership Academic Bowl Team that led our team through the first two rounds successfully competing against all the JROTC units in our JROTC Brigade. Yena Suh is one of the most dedicated, reliable and dependable cadet in the JROTC Battalion. Outstanding student, cadet and leader! Yena is heavily involved in other activities outside of JROTC. She serves as the California-Nevada-Hawaii District Executive Treasurer for Key Club where she trains club treasurers all over the three states. She is the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illnesses) President and founded this club during her Sophomore Year in order to spread awareness of mental health. Yena also serves as the NHS (National Honor Society) Vice President. Please help me to congratulate Yena Suh in being selected as the Sonora's Rotary Student of the Month for the month of November. ID Cards ID cards will be required for each student to carry and have visible throughout the school day. Due to the fact that we have transitioned to hybrid learning, it will be vital to be able to easily identify Sonora students that are on campus and attending on the correct day with the rest of their cohort. Students will be asked to have their ID visible as they enter the campus each day and will be given a sticker that will identify which cohort and days they are currently attending. If you have lost or misplaced your ID card, you may purchase a replacement card at the ASB window for $5. For those students that have not received their ID card because they have not taken their picture yet, may come to the ASB windows to take a picture.

Sonora's JROTC JROTC is a Leadership course where cadets develop their leadership, citizenship and civic skills. At Sonora, the Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) is an Honor Unit with Distinction which is the highest honor bestowed upon JROTC units from the U.S. Army Cadet Command. As an Honor Unit with Distinction the Senior Army Instructor can recommend competitive Cadets for a nomination for Appointment to the U.S. Military Academies based on the following: Academic Ability, Extracurricular Activities (Non-Sports), Athletic Abilities (Varsity Sports), and Personal Qualities. JROTC is also a College Preparatory "G" Elective for all four years and students can earn their PE credit by taking two years of JROTC. JROTC also has an after school program called Competitive Drill. Cadets in that program have the opportunity to earn their JROTC Varsity Letter and may gain membership in the National JROTC Military Honor Society of Scabbard and Blade.
