Hot Glass Intensive – An Introduction to Melting Studio Glass

Glass blowers, have you ever wanted to make your own 96-compatible glass from scratch? Then join us for a week-long workshop led by Paul Anders-Stout. For five full days, you will work from known formulas and adjust ingredients and colorants. We'll review glass ingredients and their purpose in a formula while we experiment with common colorants such as cobalt, copper, silver, manganese, and more.
Participants will also learn how to test glass expansion in the studio and use that information to adjust the formula of their colors to fit their studio glass. You will be able to make and take color bars from the successful melts!

Student Spotlight -
Tanya Mirchandani
Tanya Mirchandani is a cyclist, world traveler, and the speaker of several languages. Her adventurous, inquisitive nature comes across in her glass art too, where she is always looking to stretch boundaries and discover something new.
Lately, Tanya has been exploring “roll-ups” – collaborating with our Hot Shop staff to transform her intricate fused pieces into remarkable vessels.
When asked why she is attracted to kiln slumping and fusing she replied, “It’s the best of both worlds: I can do a lot of the work at home, either by myself or alongside my husband, and then I can bring pieces to be fired at the school and be part of a generous community.”
Is she ready to think about blowing glass? “Not yet!" she says. "I still have things to learn in the Warm Shop!”

Glass At Home Mosaic Kits Now Available!
We've expanded our Glass At Home offerings to include beautiful DIY mosaic kits. Available in Dragonfly, Cactus, or Flower, the kits are $30 each. They include instructions and all the materials you need to complete your project.

Southwest Folklife Alliance Master-Apprentice Awards
For the first time, a glass blower is among the 2020 recipients of the annual Southwest Folklife Alliance Master-Apprentice Award.
This year's honorees include a capoeirista, a Navajo weaver, a horsehair and agave fiber rope maker, a mariachi folk violinist, a steel pan craftsman, a paper flower maker, an O’odham silversmith, an ancestral foodways chef, and a folk musician, all nominated by community members and selected by a panel of cultural leaders and peers. Artists/tradition bearers and their mentees each receive monetary grants to support the transmission of traditional knowledge and work together for one year.

SGS Receives Creative Aging Seed Grant
We’re thrilled to be one of only fourteen nonprofit community arts education organizations across the country to receive funding to pilot a new Catalyzing Creative Aging program. Our staff has worked with the National Guild of Community Arts Education to develop unique curriculum for adults 55+.
Programs such as these are more critical than ever in this time of social distancing and we're excited to be able to offer these meaningful resources. We are partnering with our friends at Hacienda at the Canyon to roll out the program this spring!
The Catalyzing Creative Aging seed grant is provided by the National Guild for Community Arts Education and made possible in part by generous support from Aroha Philanthropies and the NAMM Foundation.

In Loving Memory
The Board and staff of Sonoran Glass School are deeply saddened by the recent passing of Charlie Smith, our accountant and friend.
Charlie was a fierce champion for Sonoran Glass School and an invaluable member of our team. There are few things that he cared about more than his family and the Detroit Tigers, but we know that SGS had earned a special place in his heart. He will be greatly missed.
