We Are...Ready For A New Year
|
Greetings Herd Alums!
Happy New Year to all of our Sons and Daughters around the globe!
We know 2020 wasn't the easiest year for many of you, but while the past year has been met with plenty of hardship and uncertainty, we are moving on and looking forward to the limitless possibilities that a new year presents.
As we look back on 2020, we can't help but focus on the positives that arose out of all of the noise. Positives such as renewed relationships, all-encompassing virtual events, and special occasions that were only made possible through unique circumstances and a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
While we learned a lot in our time stuck at home and communicating on our smart devices, we look forward to a time where we can return to in-person meetings, events and gatherings. Because, while a large virtual chat is fun, it certainly can't compare to time face-to-face with your fellow alumni.
So, we raise a glass to the good that 2020 generated and to the possibilities that 2021 holds. Here's to you Herd Alums!
Enjoy reading this edition of Sons & Daughters. GO HERD!

Contract of Marshall Football Head Coach Doc Holliday Will Not be Renewed
Marshall University announced Monday that the contract of head football coach Doc Holliday will not be renewed.
Holliday gave thoughts on his tenure at Marshall via Twitter Monday morning. Those may be viewed here.
In 2020, Holliday was selected as the league's Coach of the Year for the second time in his career (2014) and was tabbed the AFCA (American Football Coaches Association) Region 4 Coach of the Year. That honor covers all of Conference USA and the Big 12 Conference and made him a finalist for National Coach of the Year. This season, he was also named to the watch list for the Bryant Awards National Coach of the Year honor as Marshall spent eight weeks ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 and climbed as high as 21st (another school record) in the College Football Playoff poll.
He also became the fifth coach in C-USA history to win multiple Coach of the Year awards.
"I want to thank Doc Holliday for the leadership he has provided this program over the past 11 seasons," said Marshall Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick. "In addition to his success on the field, he ran a clean program, graduated his student-athletes and prepared young men for life after football."

Board of Governors meets in last session of 2020; Spending for second half of fiscal year approved
The Marshall University Board of Governors, meeting virtually in its last session of the calendar year, approved spending for the second half of the fiscal year, a period marked by budgetary ups and downs imposed by a global pandemic.
University officials say the proposed budget, described as intentionally conservative because of COVID-19, was adjusted upward to include nearly $1 million more in tuition and student fees than had been originally budgeted.
The board has moved forward with quarterly approvals until now. With a nod to cautious optimism, board members approved spending for the final two quarters of the fiscal year. Chairman Patrick Farrell, while acknowledging tough decisions still lie ahead, congratulated Marshall President Jerome A. Gilbert and his executive team for their crisis leadership during the fall term.
