How Water Impacts Yield
By Brent Bean, Ph.D., Sorghum Checkoff Agronomy Director

"Sorghum is often able to withstand short periods of drought with little or no noticeable effect on yield. However, receiving a timely inch of water that prevents an extended period of drought can have a positive impact on yield, much more so than an inch of water received on sorghum that is not under any moisture stress," explains Dr. Brent Bean. Learn more about water and its impact on sorghum's yield.
TECHNOLOGY SPOTLIGHT:
USING THE SUGARCANE APHID APP

Checkout the newest technology in the form of an app: Sugarcane Aphid Glance-N-Go. Available in the App Store or Google Play, the app helps to determine when a threshold level has been reached and an insecticide application should be made to treat sugarcane aphids. The app development was led by Tom Royer of Oklahoma State, as well as entomologists from Texas A&M, Kansas State and Louisiana State. Learn more.
PLANTING FORAGES IN TIMES OF DROUGHT
USING FORAGE SORGHUM TO YOUR BENEFIT

As drought conditions continue across the United States, many producers are looking to forage sorghum to help during water-stressed times. "Forage sorghum has many benefits for farmers facing historic drought. It is an efficient user of limited water resources, and it provides valuable feedstocks for dairies and feedyards throughout the region," explains John Duff, executive vice president for National Sorghum Producers. FOR THE BIRDS!
KANSAS HABITAT PROGRAM FOR FARMERS AND GAMEBIRDS

The United Sorghum Checkoff Program and Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever have partnered together to create a new habitat program in the heart of America's sorghum belt. It's called Sorghum for BIRDS (Building Innovative, Resilient, and Diverse agricultural Systems). “The resource-conserving nature of sorghum makes it a key contributor to healthy soils and the protection of precious water sources, while its wildlife-friendly characteristics help to support diverse ecosystems. By helping pair this incredible commodity with quality habitat, we’re reestablishing pheasants and quail in western Kansas while meeting ecosystem objectives for growers,” said Brittany Smith, Precision Ag & Conservation Specialist for Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever.
