Today's Meeting: This was our monthly business meeting, with one super addition.
When our Darling Sandy Williams, featured in the photos above, passed away a few years ago, her husband Keith donated all of his art to our Soroptimist club. After huge delays due to covid, we were finally able to honor his wishes and have an art auction. Mt. Tallac school was at the center of Sandy's heart and today we were able to present the staff there with a check for $3923.00. At this time, their plan is to spend that money putting on a Prom for their students. I know Sandy would have loved that and been there to help dressed in her finest!
Invocation: Nancy read Lydia's lovely invocation. Years ago, Lydia and her husband ran into Sandy Williams in Kmart buying Christmas lights. They were all frazzled and frustrated by lights that didn't work and wouldn't come untangled. For years afterward, Sandy was known to Donald as "The Christmas light lady". What a fitting name for such a joyful, strong and bright spirit as Sandy. Whenever you find yourselves getting frazzled or frustrated, especially during the Christmas season, step back and appreciate the wonder and blessings all around.
Sunshine: Please send thoughts and prayers out to our dear Tina for healing and for Kim's brother-in-law's brother for peace and healing from a tragic accident.
Business:
We were able to pass our Fundraising budget this morning and got a reminder of how our General and Service budgets work and where the various monies come from.
Shirley read a plethora of Thank Yous for donations given by our Healthy Women Healthy World committee. We heard from: The Boys and Girls club, Between Horses and Humans, Tahoe Rim Trail, Camp Buck Diabetes camp, Lake Tahoe Wildlife, Drug Store Project, Bread and Broth for kids and the regular Bread and Broth program. Sierra house also sent a thank you to members of our club for volunteering for their Harvest Festival.
End of year reminder: People who have IRA’s, including 401k’s and some other retirement funds, are required to start taking minimum distributions at age 70 1/2 or age 72 in some cases. These distributions are counted as taxable income to you. You can opt to make a Qualified Charitable Contribution to a 501c3 organization, such as SITS, which does not count as taxable income to you. The distribution needs to go directly to the charity which you can arrange with your IRA administrator. (If the distribution goes directly to you and you subsequently make a contribution to a charitable organization, the distribution is still taxable to you.) If you’d like to contribute to SITS, please have the check sent directly to PO Box 18727, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96151.
We have three anniversaries to celebrate this month: Thanks for volunteering ladies, you make a huge difference.
