SYNOPSIS:

A Florida police station in the middle of the night; a mother searching for her missing teenage son. AMERICAN SON is a gripping tale of two parents caught in our national divide, with their worst fears hanging in the balance. Lieutenant John Stokes – Black, Male, 50s-60s. A tough, no-nonsense career police officer who is used to having people listen when he talks. He has paid his dues. He knows the rules and has no hesitation enforcing them.

Midwest Nice - Call for Art

Archive the West

DEADLINE: 7/20/2025

The Western United States has become a long-standing art trope. Images of Monument Valley and other iconic landmarks have saturated the art-sphere, but these often seem like one-offs or fetishization devoid of a necessary context. Absent a larger series or archive, these depictions often rely on shallow understandings of the region’s cultural history. For this call, we want to see depictions of the American West that draw upon personal or collective archives. Use them as inspiration or building blocks in the work itself. Dig into dusty prints or negatives that speak to the wild beauty, austere landscape, and diverse happenings of the American West, or provide original pieces from a current project that incorporates or addresses the archives’ informing role. We want to see them!

The exhibition will examine these ideas through a variety of mediums in art. Any mediums are welcome, including but not limited to sculpture, painting, collage, photography, digital art, video art, installation, ceramics, performance art…anything you can think of! You may submit up to 3 artworks for a $5 fee, due July 20, 2025. Artists will receive a notification a week after the deadline. Students may submit for free with the code STUDENT25 (to use this, please use your school email when applying). The exhibition will go live August 2025.

If you have any questions, please reach out to us at midwestniceart@gmail.com.

Deadline: 06/02/2025

Venturous Capital Grants

The goal of our Venturous Capital Grants program is to support writers of bold, experimental, and/or large-scale new plays by giving theaters the ability to say “yes” instead of “no” to writer-driven projects that are unusually heavy lifts, i.e., that are perceived as especially challenging. While we do not fund routine production costs, we offer grants to support specific extraordinary costs that might otherwise make venturous plays difficult or impossible to produce.

Any eligible theater may submit a Letter of Inquiry (LOI). We will invite selected companies to submit full applications from the pool of LOIs under consideration. We do not accept unsolicited applications.

For projects selected to submit a full application, the theater will submit a playscript for review by our selection committee for that grant round. The script may be in draft or final form. However, we cannot consider LOIs for plays that have not yet been written.

Awards range from $5,000 – $35,000

LOI Deadline: June 2, 2025

Public Art for Neighborhoods Grants Available

Public Art for Neighborhoods is a City of Indianapolis program that ensures that City incentive funding for private development in certain districts returns benefits to neighborhoods in the form of increased arts and cultural activity. At least 50% of funds granted through this program will support projects in neighborhoods where the average household income is less than 138% of the current Federal poverty line.

The Community Connection Grants are designed to support the work of artists leading in their own communities, partnering with their neighborhoods and neighborhood-based organizations, to help address community-based challenges. Projects that address needs identified in the 2022 Public Art for All equity census will be prioritized for funding; however, any neighborhood-based arts project is eligible. Through this funding, artists can help envision a more connected, just, and equitable future for everyone.

Crankie Festival

Seeking Artists & Committee Members

DEADLINE: 12/30/2026

Be a part of starting the first Crankie Festival in Bloomington, Indiana. Currently looking for artists and committee members, both of which are volunteer positions. This festival showcases the work of artist at any point in their artistic career. No experience required. The festival will be in April 2026.

What are crankies? – They were created in Japan as 11th-century scroll paintings. As this art form spread across the world, its form and name changed many times in the 19th century to moving panoramas. In the 1960s, Peter Schumann invented the term “cranky”. This led to the current name of cranky/ crankie.

A crankie is a form of storytelling. Using a box with dowel rods to attach and crank (turn) a scroll. Usually accompanied by music or poetry, with the imagery on the scroll. A scroll can be as long as the artist wants. The box of a crankie can range in size from a matchbox to as large as you can imagine. There are crankie festivals all across the world, and in the US, and we hope to bring the joy of this art form to Bloomington. Every artist must make their crankie scroll. This can be any medium. AI art will NOT be accepted and will ban you from applying in the future.
