Somewhere along my journey this past year I was reading a book about the process of dying when I came across the phrase “making friends with death.” I resonated with this so much that I added the idea to my ever-changing list of SoulCollage® Cards That I’d Like to Make. At our annual KaleidoSoul retreat last June, I pulled out the list and was reminded of this idea. I sought out images and the card came together very quickly for me.

Because it had so many images, after I laid it out under the frame I grabbed my iPhone and took a photo of it so that I could remember which image went where when I began the tedious process of gluing it all together.

Then I looked at the photo on my phone and what I saw blew me away. The flash had gone off while I took the picture and suddenly, my card was full of Light in a couple of very important places. I get goosebumps every time I look at this card now and am reminded over and over again that Spirit can touch our lives and our cards in unexpected ways and in surprising moments. All we have to do is be on the lookout!

Seena Frost, who created this process, was fond of reminding us often about The 3 S’s of SoulCollage®: Sacredness, Surprise, and Synchronicity.

Synchronicity plays a big part in the lives of all SoulCollagers. I read once that coincidence is Spirit’s way of remaining anonymous. How has synchronicity played a part in the creation of your own deck?

We may often rely on external remedies and resources for healing; meanwhile, a powerful source of healing energy resides within each of us in the form of our Inner Healer. Some years ago, near the beginning of my life as a SoulCollager, I went to a workshop on the Companions suit. During this workshop I had an experience I’ll never forget.

As we relaxed into Seena’s wonderful Companions meditation, I quickly honed in on my second chakra. To my delight, a very special group of animals surged up before my inner gaze. I had a magical time communing with these wonderful creatures as they stretched in the sunshine, romped, played with each other, and slid gracefully in and out of the lake in the Peruvian jungle where I’d seen them while on holiday.

Our contact during the meditation was rich and full. Then the meditation ended, and with it my elation. The animals were, after all, a rare species threatened with extinction. My heart sank. No other sort of otter would do for this SoulCollage® card – it had to be the Giant River Otter. And surely I would never find so rare an animal in the box of images which my fellow participants were now eagerly rummaging through. I took a breath. I waited till everyone else had found their animal image and moved into card-making. With a thudding sense of imminent disappointment, I approached the box and began browsing through the images. I turned over one image – and the second image I saw was…the Giant River Otter of the Amazon - an extraordinary synchronicity!

This particular Companions card holds extra-precious meaning. Not only does it embody for me personally the flow of intuitive creativity located in the second chakra, it also serves as a powerful reminder of the important role of synchronicity in our SoulCollage® practice.

SoulCollage® and synchronicity have a rich and multi-faceted relationship. As Seena says in her book SoulCollage® Evolving - when we exclaim, as we so often do, that “These cards are amazing,” what we’re really talking about is synchronicity, “a word C. G. Jung used to mean meaningful coincidences”. *

Synchronicity weaves through our SoulCollage® practice like a thread of gold, sometimes signaling its presence very clearly. As in my Otter anecdote, synchronicity is there when we find the logically unfindable image we were looking for; or when we draw a Community card for the friend we were just thinking about that morning; or when in the final stage of a card reading, we lay out our three or four cards as a series and suddenly notice a visual theme or pattern shared by these cards which we’d never otherwise have noticed.

Yet the role of synchronicity in our SoulCollage® practice is deeper and wider than these specific examples suggest. We beam into, spot or pick up synchronicity when our attention is aligned in a particular way – receptive yet focused, playful, and open to surprise. This state of being is close to being in “in the zone” or “in the flow” – when we’re so absorbed in being creative that time flies by and we forget everything except what we’re doing. The more immersed we become in our SoulCollage® practice, the more synchronicities seem to appear – as if the SoulCollage® process itself encourages the experience of synchronicity. And perhaps it does! Maybe having a SoulCollage® practice attunes us to experiencing synchronicity?
