Returning to Mode 1: In-Person Learning

We are thrilled to be able to return to Mode 1 on Tuesday, February 16. We look forward to welcoming all students to the building daily. The White-Blue calendar for the next two weeks can be found here. We will release a calendar for March 1 and beyond soon.

All students must follow the required mitigation strategies - health screenings, masks, physical distancing, and hand hygiene - both in and outside of school to keep everyone healthy. All students must take their health screening daily before they arrive and report symptoms and close contacts to our nurse. Parents can choose remote learning for their students or have them return to in-person learning by contacting Mr. Luczynski at [email protected]
Drop-Off and Pick-Up in Mode 1

As we transition back into Mode 1, please be aware that the car line for drop-off and pick-up will be busier than usual. Please adhere to the following guidelines to help traffic flow smoothly and to promote general safety:

  • Plan to arrive earlier as the line will be more congested
  • Pull all the way to the front for drop-off, as guided by the parking line attendant
  • Any students crossing the street must do so at the crosswalk of Cedar St. and Notre Dame Ave.
  • If switching drivers, please pull forward beyond the attendant, and complete drop-off at the front of the line. This will prevent blockages.

Thank you for adhering to these guidelines and ensuring a safe, smooth carline!
New Guidance from the ISDH

This week, the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) released new guidance for schools related to contact tracing and quarantine. The new protocols are summarized below. We will amend our Back-to-School Plan and SJHS Return Guidance accordingly.

Contact Tracing: Close contact in general is defined as being within six feet of a person positive for COVID-19 for more than 15 cumulative minutes. As of February 8, 2021, close contact in the classroom will only occur when a student is within three feet of a person positive for COVID-19, as long as students are facing forward and masks are worn at all times. Please note:
  • If a student or teacher takes off their mask in the classroom, then the six-foot rule applies.
  • In settings where students remove their masks (i.e. lunch, athletics, band, choir), then the six-foot rule applies.

At Saint Joseph High School, this will generally reduce contact tracing in the classroom to only the student who is sitting at the same table as a student who is positive for COVID-19.

Returning from Quarantine: We will follow the decision-tree document from the ISDH regarding the length of quarantine for someone who has a close contact, but does not develop symptoms. Under these conditions, the individual can return after 10 days without testing or after 7 days with a documented negative test for COVID-19. The specific timeline and type of test accepted are outlined in the decision-tree document and summarized in our SJHS Return Guidance. Individuals returning prior to 14 days must wear their mask at all times through day 14 (including extra-curricular activities), or, in the case of lunch, maintain six feet of distancing -- which means students will eat in the Blackbox Theater from day 11 to day 14. In all cases, Saint Joseph High School retains the right to determine the return date of any student or staff member.
Third Quarter Christian Service Hours Due Friday, Feb. 26.

We will continue to allow all types of service to be submitted for Christian Service hours this semester. This includes and pre-approves services rendered to family and neighbors.

In addition to this modification, we accept parents, neighbors, and other relatives to act as "service-supervisors." Any service that is rendered to the aforementioned group may be submitted as Christian Service hours and verified by parent/family/neighbor email or signature.

Please ensure all service hours have been submitted to the MobileServe app. Contact Mrs. Kathleen Kershner with any questions or concerns. Additional information can be found on our Christian Service page.
Ash Wednesday Mass

We look forward to entering into the holy season of Lent on Ash Wednesday, February 17. We will celebrate two Masses in order to maintain at least three feet of spacing between students. This year, we will distribute ashes by sprinkling them atop the head.
HB 1005 - Expansion of School Choice Scholarships

Please consider contacting your state legislator to ask him or her to support Indiana House Bill 1005 (HB 1005) entitled "School Choice Matters." This bill proposes bold expansions to the School Choice Scholarship program which will make more families eligible and bring all scholarships up to the 90% level making Catholic School more affordable for Indiana families.

The bill also proposes the establishment of a new program, an Educational Savings Account which can help families save for private education.  For the choice expansion bill to be successful we need our community to engage with their elected officials! The Indiana Non-Public Education Association (INPEA) has an action alert posted on their Legislative Action Center for you to send a message to your representative on HB 1005 today!

We are very thankful to Mrs. Brown for her time at Saint Joe and the care she put into guiding each and every student-athlete, team, and coach during her tenure. She will be missed by the Saint Joe community!

Swimming
Girls swimming participated in the IHSAA Sectional Finals last Saturday at Riley High School. As a team, Saint Joe finished second overall behind Penn. Mary Cate Pruitt finished her final high school sectional with a perfect record, winning 16 out of a possible 16 sectional titles.

The team set five new pool records, three new sectional records, and two new school records. Swimmers advanced to the IHSAA State Championship in nine of the twelve events, sending more swimmers to State than any other school from the area sectional.

Mary Cate Pruitt, Lauren Pieniazkiewicz, Emma Feltzer, Jane Lloyd, Olivia Elston, Cece Farrell and Marguax Hannewyk will be representing Saint Joe at the the State Championship Meet, held at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis this weekend. The prelims and finals will be streamed via pay-per-view at IHSAAtv.org.

The boys team finished fifth at the NIC Meet on January 30. Congratulations to Sammy Sierra and Johnny Bossler for breaking NIC records; Sierra in both the 200 IM and 100 Butterfly, and Bossler in the 500 Free! Congratulations also to Sammy Sierra for taking home NIC MVP honors! Sierra earned co-MVP last year, but this year won the title outright.

The Boys will continue training as they prepare to compete in the IHSAA Sectionals on February 18 for prelims and February 20 for finals at Penn High School.
Boys Basketball
J.R. Konieczny broke the Saint Joe scoring record in Tuesday night's win over Concord, dropping 35 points to surpass Chris Quinn's 1993 mark of 1,700 points!

The boys team hopes to ride the record-breaking momentum as they travel to Marian tonight for the Holy War on Hardwood. The game is set to tip at 7:30 p.m. and will be streamed by Redeemer Radio. The JV game will begin at 6:00 p.m. and be broadcast by Redeemer Radio's student interns, including Marie Achkar, Liam Fuller, and Zach Smith.
Girls Basketball
The girls finished the regular season with a late rally to beat LaPorte, propelling them into the postseason where they won their first game over Clay, 83-27.

The Tribe met arch-rival Marian in the next round, where they did not find the firepower to keep up with the Knight's hot shooting. The team has much to be proud of this season, and sends a grateful goodbye to seniors Sarah Niestand, Mia Naman, and Hannah Tyler. Many thanks for the time, energy, and enthusiasm you brought to each practice and each game. What a season!
