Building Faith, Character, and Excellence
February 7th, 2020
Message from Principal Kennedy
Looking Back with Pride; Looking Ahead with Excitement
Dear Saint Joe Family,

Catholic Schools Week reminded me that Saint Joseph High School is a special place. At Saint Joe students are challenged to reach higher academically, grow spiritually, and serve joyfully in a supportive environment. Their efforts, achievements, and character are evident daily. For example:

  • Earning 51 Scholastic Art Awards and 41 Scholastic Writing Awards.
  • Girls swimming earning an NIC title, and, more importantly, presenting gifts to a rival team as a thank you for allowing us to use their pool while our practice facility was under maintenance.
  • The entire wrestling team, who sent four wrestlers to regional, enthusiastically piling on the bus to support our one female wrestler in one of the few girls meets of the season.
  • Over 60 students participating in the National March for Life in Washington D.C.
  • A current senior earning a 2019 Indiana Outstanding Latino High School Student Award by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

These are the hallmarks of Saint Joseph High School and evidence that our students are thriving. I witness enthusiasm, positivity, and joy expressed by our students daily. I see them challenging themselves and each other while also acting with kindness and showing deep support for peers. I see this becoming the fabric of who we are.

Thus, I am thrilled to announce that enrollment for the 2020-21 academic year will soon begin . Please watch for an email from Sue Ushela, Director of Admissions, for instructions on how to re-enroll your son or daughter. Thank you in advance for your prompt completion of this important process, as it allows us to plan effectively for the next school year.

Tuition and fees for 2020-21 are listed on our website ( click here ) and summarized below:
  • Parishioner tuition (one child): $7,150
  • Non-Parishioner tuition (one child): $8,750

  • Fees (includes laptop and text rental): $1,200

Saint Joseph High School remains committed to affordability for all families, which we accomplish by keeping tuition rates lower than the actual cost of education, and by providing need-based financial assistance. We deeply appreciate the philanthropic support that makes this part of our mission possible.

Finally, for your planning purposes, please visit the 2020-21 calendar here

I am inspired by our students and faculty daily, and look forward to another wonderful year at Saint Joe! Thank you for choosing Catholic education and for all you do to support us in our mission to transform students in heart and mind.

God Bless and Go Indians!
Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
2019-20 Scholastic Art Award Winners
2019-20 Scholastic Writing Award Winners
The Scholastic Writing Award winners* were published last Soundings, and this week we received the list of Scholastic Art Award winners as well!

Much like the writing awards, Saint Joe is well-represented on this list, with 51 awards won by 29 different students. Award designations are the same, with recipients earning Gold Key, Silver Key, or Honorable Mention status. We will post student artwork across the Saint Joe social media accounts over the coming weeks ( Facebook , Twitter , and Instagram ).

A special congratulations to both Annie Bretz (Scholastic Writing) and Mary Kate Kocovski (Scholastic Art), who earned American Voices and American Visions nominations! The American Voices & Visions awards are similar to a "best-in-show" and awarded to a select few from each region. Their submissions will be judged by a panel in New York City, with winners receiving medals for their region. We are very proud of Annie and Mary Kate!

*Brendan Gonzales was not listed in our last issue of Soundings, though he won a Gold Key in the Scholastic Writing Awards for his Science Fiction & Fantasy piece, "The Bottom Line."
We regret the omission.

Girls' swimming advanced all swimmers to the IHSAA Sectional Final, taking place Saturday, 1:00 p.m. at Penn High School.
The girls' basketball team beat Clay, 63-25, in the sectional opener. With that win the Indians will earned a change to tangle with Marian tonight in the semi-final game at John Glenn. Tip is slated for 7:30 p.m.

B oys' basketball has won three of their last four, including a 63-57 Homecoming win over Penn and a 59-42 victory over New Prairie to close this week. The boys are off this weekend while they rest up for a home tilt on Tuesday as the team takes on Adams.
Wrestling advanced four competitors to the IHSAA Regional, which takes place Saturday morning, 9:00 a.m., at Penn High School. The four Saint Joe participants are Sergio Hernandez, Amarion Parker, Jonny Scott, and Cheryl Williams.

The Saint Joe hockey varsity took down Adams last weekend by a score of 3-2, with goals tallied by BJ Eckrich, Karsen Meiszberg, and Champ Farrell. This weekend the team kicks off play in the double-elimination City Tournament.

This philanthropic group also participated in the Irish Youth Hockey Learn to Play program last week. They even pulled double-duty when they hopped on the sleds and scrimmaged the South Bend Sled Dogs in the same day!
