Building Faith, Character, and Excellence
January 18, 2018
Letter from the Principal
Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed some quality time with family and faith over Christmas break. Kathy and I most enjoyed having our oldest son, Marty, home from Notre Dame and the treasures of being together during the holidays.

At SJHS, we started this semester with student grade level meetings. In these meetings, we discussed school climate and asked students to think about what they can do to build positivity and joy, and to welcome and support each other daily. We also discussed certain responsibilities, such as dress code and keeping our school clean, as well as what “owning your learning” looks like.

In general, we engaged all students in thinking about how to both aim for success and enjoy the relationships and experiences along the way as we, together, continue to make Saint Joseph High School an amazing place to spend four years.
Midwinter Dance

We expect to hold the Midwinter Dance as scheduled. The weather is predicted to be extremely cold Sunday night. Please be certain that your students dress appropriately for the weather and have a ride home after the dance. If we need to cancel the dance due to weather, that will be announced through our website, Twitter, and local media.

German Students Win Prizes in Essay Contest
The Indiana German Heritage Society held a German-American Day essay contest and encouraged high schools across the state to participate.

Saint Joe students performed superbly in the contest, with junior Timothy Freeby winning the $300 prize finishing in first place, and seniors Andrew Orians and Jaclyn Voss (pictured below) finishing in second and third, winning $200 and $100 prizes respectively. Junior Hadley Lindzy took fifth place, while juniors Mary Jane Nolan and John VanMeter finished with honorable mention.

Congrats to all! Feel free to browse the Indiana German Heritage Society newsletter to read Timothy Freeby's winning essay.
Christian Service Offers New Method of
Tracking Hours
Saint Joe will allow students to track service hours electronically with our new Christian Service Hours Verification Platform. MobileServe is an app that permits students to track and submit their Christian Service Hours using their cell phone or any internet-connected device. Students can download the app at no charge.

If you would like to learn more about the product, please visit  MobileServe . During this transition period, paper service hour sheets will still be accepted. After an assessment period, we are hoping to fully transition to electronic service hours submission.

If you have any questions, please contact our Christian Service Coordinator, Kathy Kershner.
Faculty Spotlight:
Mr. Brett Goodrich
Saint Joseph High School math teacher Mr. Brett Goodrich recently received a patent from the U.S. Department of Energy for research conducted while obtaining his Masters Degree at Notre Dame.

The research focused on using ionic liquids to absorb carbon dioxide in the development of clean coal technology. Due to hydrogen bonding, ionic liquids can be very viscous, creating an almost gel-like liquid. Mr. Goodrich's team developed new ionic liquids using heteraromatic compounds (carbon rings) and reacted them with carbon dioxide to show a reduction in hydrogen bonding.

The research was submitted for a patent in November of 2010 and, and long last, received approval on April 24th, 2018. Congrats Mr. Goodrich!

The Saint Joe hockey team was busy during Christmas break, as not only did they host the annual alumni hockey game, but they also unfurled the flag at Notre Dame Stadium for the NHL Winter Classic between the Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins!

The annual Alumni vs. current team hockey game was held on Christmas Eve at noon on the Rink 1 ice at the Ice Box. Fifteen alumni faced off against members of the current and recent teams in a battle for the Chandler Cup.

Current coach Chris Kleva organized the game and put forth a stellar effort for the Alumni team who prevailed in the contest. A number of brother combinations bolstered the alumni efforts including Marc and Christien Joubert, Matt and Mike Potter and Sean and Josh McMillen. After the post-game handshakes, members of both teams joined in a rendition of the Saint Joe Fight Song and a photo session. The tradition continues!
Girls' Swimming outlasted Penn to claim the NIC Championship in swimming, amassing 606 points to Penn's 550. Saint Joe claimed the top spot in eight different events, while also featuring the runner up in four of those eight events.
