Building Faith, Character, and Excellence
November 9, 2018
The Harvard women’s basketball team held a practice at Saint Joe’s Alumni Gymnasium on Thursday, bringing Madeline Raster, ’15, home in advance of their contest against Notre Dame on Friday.

Raster, a four-year starter and second-year co-captain for the Crimson, has a chance to break Harvard’s record for consecutive starts if she remains healthy and the Crimson earn a postseason bid. She took a moment after practice to speak about what it means to come back to Saint Joe and play in front of friends and family at Notre Dame.

The game against the Irish takes place at 4:00 p.m. Friday, November 9 th , at Purcell Pavilion. Raster hopes to attend law school at some point after receiving her undergraduate degree from Harvard.

PLTW Engineering Creates
Hydrogen Cell-Powered Vehicles
Engineering students put together vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells last month as part of Project Lead the Way. The hydrogen cells were charged using solar power, and then "set loose" on the floor of the auxiliary gym. Check out the videos below!
Snow Days and eLearning
As winter approaches, it is important to know the procedures for weather-related school closures and delays. A decision to close or delay school will be made by 6:00 a.m. Information will be communicated via local media (WNDU, WSBT, ABC-57), on our website, and through a push notification via the SJHS App.

Closures and eLearning
New this year, we will have eLearning Days. Information posted via media will indicate whether a closure will be an eLearning day. On an eLearning day, learning will continue even when the building is closed. Class assignments will be placed on Canvas for students to access from home. Teachers will be available via email and/or phone for consultation for a four-hour period during the day. An advantage of eLearning is that these days do not need to be made up later in the school year.  We will have a practice eLearning Day on Wednesday, November 28. Students will stay home on this day and access their work via Canvas.  Please look for a letter detailing the procedures for eLearning in the next few weeks.

Delayed Start
Certain weather conditions may result in a two-hour delayed start. School will start at 10:15 a.m. and regular attendance is expected. All classes, including Flex period, will meet on these days for 60 minutes. Lunch will be served, and school will end at the regular time of 3:15 p.m.

Athletics & Co-Curriculars
On a school closure, all morning practices are cancelled. Depending on conditions later in the day, afternoon practices and games may or may not be held. Information will be communicated to players and parents by coaches via Final Forms or other means. If a practice is held, players will be excused if individual parents determine that conditions make it too difficult to transport their son or daughter to practice.
Open House
Please invite friends, family, and neighbors to join us for the annual Open House for prospective students and parents. All ages are welcome. Open House will take place on Sunday, November 11th, from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Meet faculty, enjoy student led tours, and celebrate 65 years of Saint Joe with sundaes in the Leep!
November Community
Award Winners
We honored November's Community Award winners after the All School Mass on November 1 st .

This month’s female recipient is Genevieve Coleman. Genevieve is active with student groups such as National Honor Society, Quiz Bowl, Fall Play/Spring Musical, French Club, and SECO. She also volunteers with Girls on the Run and St. Vincent de Paul, spearheading the Hunger Bowl this past fall. Genevieve is passionate about writing – creating and leading the Creative Writing Club – as well as engaging with and educating the student body about important issues such as the environment and life at conception.

The male award winner for the month is Ashton Ruszkowski. Ashton is a natural leader and an incredibly caring individual, exemplified by his role as the football team’s starting quarterback. He has donated his time to youth sports camps, Healthwin, and helping at his former grade school. Ashton is always willing to go out of his way to support those around him and talk about what the Saint Joe community means to him.

The recipient of the faculty and staff award for November is Social Studies Department Chair Mr. Mike McCarthy. Mr. McCarthy coaches both the cross country at track teams at Saint Joe, and is known for being able to challenge and engage students in the classroom.
