Announcing Trinity Center's

We are excited to announce that Trinity Center's Executive Director search was a great success and are so pleased to announce that John Koch has accepted the position as Executive Director of Trinity Center and will assume his duties on June 10. Ed Hodges, Chairman of Trinity Center's Board of Managers, states, "We are thrilled that John is coming. He has an outstanding record and is so personable. I am excited for the future of the Center as he helps us rebuild from COVID and leads us into the future. John is exactly what we were looking for, and I am excited about working with him." Bishop Skirving adds, “We had a strong pool of candidates, and I am grateful to the Board for their dedication and part in the hiring process. John’s mature leadership will bring a wealth of good experience and energy to Trinity Center, and I look forward to working closely with John in his new role.”

John has more than 25 years of experience as a senior camp and conference center executive who has excellent public speaking, administrative, and management skills with extensive experience in fund-raising and donor development. John’s creative and collaborative style of leadership will certainly be an enhancement to Trinity Center and help promote its goals. John notes, “I am excited and humbled to be selected as the next Executive Director of the Trinity Center. Trinity has such a great story and a wonderful ministry. I look forward to collaborating with the staff, Board of Managers, and the Diocese of East Carolina to discover its next chapter. Thank you for entrusting me with the leadership of this dynamic camp and conference center.” Welcome, John! We are so happy you are joining us as the Executive Director of Trinity Center!
Before and After...Updates at Trinity Center
We are thrilled to say that we've been giving some updates to our West and East Housing Clusters and Beach House! The fresh paint and construction has made these spaces shine and look better than ever! Just look at the before and after above of the West Housing Cluster: it looks fantastic. We are so excited to welcome you to these fresh spaces all around Trinity Center, and we thank you for your support in this process!
From the Archives: The Making of Trinity Center
Did you know that Trinity Center was created from two separate camps: Camp Leach and Camp Oceanside? In 1930 under Bishop Darst, a property was acquired on the Pamlico River in Washington to build Camp Leach as the Diocese of East Carolina's first camp and conference center. Camp Leach was home to the first Summer Camp for youth that was initially only for white children.

In 1955 at Ocean City Beach on Topsail Island, leadership from Historically Black Congregations in the diocese opened Camp Oceanside for two weeks in rented facilities. This camp for black children grew between 1955 and 1959 outgrowing its original rented facilities. In 1960 a permanent space for Camp Oceanside was dedicated, built on land donated to the diocese by Ocean City land developers.
In 1949 a sixty-two acre piece of land that now comprises Trinity Camp and Conference Center was given to the diocese by Alice Green Hoffman. In 1985 both Camp Leach and Camp Oceanside were closed to make way for an integrated camp built at Trinity Center. Read the rest of the story of Trinity Center's history here.

Meet Scooter: Our Yellow-Bellied Slider Turtle
Scooter is a local celebrity: we have heard reports that when a teacher asked her students what their favorite wild animal was, Scooter's name came up! This homebody is not ready for a major life of fame on the road; road life apparently makes him cranky! Scooter was, of course, a hit when the Icky Creatures program went on the road to schools here in NC, but Scooter is happy to be home for a while. He is a very food-motivated fellow, and like most turtles he has a tendency to want to overeat. To keep him in tip-top shape, Scooter has an exercise regimen that you can see in the video to the right. He loves his walks in the field (See the video to the right to see his speed!), as well as time in the sun and with his StS buddies. Scooter's gearing up for summer day camp, and we know he can't wait to see all of his friends again!
Summer Sound to Sea Day Camp
Registration for our Summer Sound to Sea is ongoing! Let our Environmental Day Camp pull your kids out of the summer vacation doldrums. We offer half-week and full-week summer camp programs to rising 1st through 6th graders. Each session allows kids the opportunity to learn about the habitats on Bogue Banks and join in games, crafts and activities with ecological themes!

Sound to Sea at Your School Program
Sound to Sea went on the road this spring, going to schools in Boone, Chapel Hill, Burnsville, and more! We offered four programs for schools to choose from: Icky Creatures, Whales and Whalers, Squid Dissections, Comparative Dissections, and Birds of Prey. Students and teachers alike had a blast learning through the programs and hands-on activities, and it was so wonderful to take StS programs to schools that couldn't make the trip here. Thank you to our instructors who logged over 2,622 miles and our amazing participants!
