From the Desk of Fr. Mark Augustine, Administrator

Hello,
As I am sure you are all aware by now, after a few years hiatus, the School of St. Mary is bringing back the annual Gala. Perhaps you have seen the window at J. Crew in Market Square, or the recent article in
Forest & Bluff
promoting the night, or the giant poster board as you enter the Church. Set amidst the beautiful Cuneo Mansion in Vernon Hills, this year's Gala theme is "Roar into the Twenties!" Although the Gala has sold out in record time there are still ways you can support it. The Gala committee is looking for parishioners to fill up their
wine cellar for their live auction. You may access the wine selection and download the order form to by going to the school website here. The Gala is the main fundraiser for the year to support our school, students, and faculty. I thank the Gala committee: Liz Berrill,
Lindsay Bianco, Julie Booma, Kelly Graham, Kim Egan, Jen Lucas, Leslie Schreiber, Carrie Seyb, Eileen Weber, and Sofia Westmeyer for their tireless effort to make this evening a success!
Last week I was called to an elderly parishioner's bedside to administer the Last Rites. As we were talking with some of her family in the room, she simply said: "well, I'm 95 and this has been my Catholic life." It was a beautiful reflection on the life to which we have all been called and a good examination her life lived up to that point. Only a few days later I received three children into the Church through a Profession of Faith, meaning they were baptized in a different denomination and now were becoming Catholic. So within 72 hours I witnessed both the beginning and end of the life of Catholics. My prayer and reflection following those encounters led me to the examination of conscience.
While many know this as a tool and aid to properly prepare us for the sacrament of confession; there is another benefit to it as well. The Examen prayer, developed largely by St. Ignatius of Loyola, is a method of reviewing our day in the presence of God. We set time aside for prayerful reflection on where God has been in our everyday life, and those moments we responded well, or failed to do so. There are 5 basic steps to this beautiful prayer as a way to truly understand God working in our lives:
1)
Ask God for light
- Lord help me to see my day with your eyes, rather than my own.
2)
Give thanks
- Every day is a gift from God, am I grateful for that?
3)
Review the day
- May the Holy Spirit guide me in reviewing my day.
4)
Face your shortcomings
- I acknowledge my failings or wrongdoing throughout this day.
5)
Look forward to the day to come
- Lord, help me to do better tomorrow than I did today.
If we learn to say this prayer daily, we truly do see the world with the eyes of faith, and can often more easily recognize how God is present in our daily life. The Church calendar shifts to Ordinary Time now until Ash Wednesday on February 26. How do we see God working in the ordinary and daily routine of our lives? May we seek to embrace those simple moments, give thanks, and always look forward to what is to come!
God Bless,
