Soup & Hope 2025
The 18th annual Soup & Hope speaker series will return to Sage Chapel on January 23, 2025, featuring six Cornell staff, faculty and student storytellers sharing their experiences of overcoming life’s challenges while attendees enjoy a free meal of soup and bread.
The series is open to the public and spotlights speakers and stories of hope. Events are free and do not require registration. While the series is held in Sage Chapel, the events are not affiliated with a religious organization.
Soup & Hope takes place in person on Thursdays from 12:00 - 1:00 PM at Sage Chapel.

Need help with common weeds that pop-up in your garden? This class from Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) will cover tips and resources for identifying weeds and best management practices. We'll move through the growing season starting with spring weeds and on through summer. Bring photos of weeds you struggle with for identification!
Instructor Janine Willis is the CCE Tompkins Community Beautification Program Coordinator and has 10+ years of experience as a landscape gardener. She enjoys educating volunteers and the public about plants and gardening techniques, allowing her to put her skills to use in public spaces.

Yamato is described as the “epitome of the Japanese spirit,” bringing new life to the traditional Japanese taiko and wadaiko drums by paying respect to their rich history, and exploring contemporary drumming styles.
Audiences around the world have been exhilarated by the heart-thumping rhythm, thunderous sounds, and explosive beats as the Yamato drummers display their remarkable physical strength and trademark infectious energy with drums that weigh up to half a ton.
For the players of Yamato, every encounter with their listeners is a unique and precious experience; their goal is to send audiences home after each performance with a new vitality and passion for life.

Seed Starting Class

Grow everything from artichokes to zucchini from seed at home! Save money, get your garden started early, and enjoy the wondrous and exciting process of seed germination and plant growth throughout the winter.
This class from Cornell Cooperative Extension will cover when to start your seeds, tool options, and using different pots including upcycled containers (in-person attendees are encouraged to bring a berry clamshell or similar container for the demonstration). Virtual attendees will be actively included, and in-person attendees will leave with herb and/or vegetable seeds started in upcycled containers.
Instructor Shoshanna Cole is a Master Gardener, homesteader, planetary geologist, and educator. She completed her Master Gardener training in 2014 while finishing her PhD at Cornell studying rocks on Mars using space robots. She has taught science to non-scientists at the college level since 1997 and has volunteered on the CCETC Growline since 2018. Her garden focuses on annual and perennial edible plants, especially unusual species and varieties.

The Great Backyard Bird Count
Each February, for four days, the world comes together for the love of birds. Over these four days, people are invited to spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them to the Lab of Ornithology. These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations. This year, the global bird count runs from February 14-17.

What better way to brush up on North American bird identification than with a fun-filled trivia game? The Merlin Bird ID app will be put to the test. Can the app outperform an experienced birder and you, our live audience? We’ll use photos and sounds to determine who can accurately identify the most North American bird species.

Become a Master Composter
Help reduce waste and improve gardens in Tompkins County as a Master Composter! Master Composter training from Cornell Cooperative Extension includes ten classes, two field trips, and practical education through class projects and volunteering. In class, trained Master Composters and local experts provide in-depth instruction about a variety of compost topics and the importance of composting in waste management. Additionally, trainees receive instruction on how to be effective teachers for a variety of age groups and in a range of settings.
The Volunteer Job Description provides additional details about the program, including qualifications for trainees, descriptions of the components of the program, and volunteer activities.
Training Dates
2025 Master Composter volunteer training will be held every Thursday evening, 6:00 to 8:00 PM, from February 13 to May 1. To accommodate school breaks, classes will not be held on March 20 or April 3.
Classes will be held in person unless it becomes necessary to hold a class via Zoom. Unless otherwise noted, in-person classes will be held at CCETC, 615 Willow Ave in Ithaca. In addition to the class sessions, two-weekday field trips will be held during the training period. In between classes, there will be additional volunteer and learning opportunities.
