Reflecting on the Labor Day weekend that signals the end of summer vacations and heading back to school for many people, it is also a time for us to appreciate the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. And, it is a good opportunity to recognize our South Bay businesses and their employees for their continuing efforts in going "green".

California Green Business Network
|
The California Green Business Network Program comes to Hawthorne and
 Torrance.
The SBCCOG, in partnership with the cities of Hawthorne and Torrance, will be conducting the California Green Business Network (CAGBN) program. The CAGBN leads the state and nation in working with small to medium-sized businesses to grow a vibrant and healthy green economy. The result is more livable communities with heathier environments, whole conserving resources and saving money.
CAGBN is a certification program and includes implementation of best management practices that address energy efficiency, waste reduction, water conservation, and a number of other "green" practices that will help businesses be more sustainable while also saving them money. Being a certified green business demonstrates to your community and customers that you are committed to taking action to conserve resources!

Mandatory Commercial Organics Recycling

I
n October
,
2014, Governor Brown signed into law AB1826, requiring businesses to recycle their organic waste on or after April 2016, depending on the amount of waste generated each week. Organic waste means food waste, green waste, landscape and pruning waste, nonhazardous wood waste, and
food-soiled paper waste that is mixed in with food waste. The law required
 that businesses generating 8 or more cubic yards of organic waste per week are required to recycle their organic waste. As of January 1, 2019, businesses generating 4 or more cubic yards of organic waste per week will be required to recycle their organic waste, and beginning January 1, 2020, businesses generating 2 or more cubic yards of organic waste per week will be required to recycle their organic waste.
Why organics?
Mandatory recycling of organic waste is the next step toward achieving California's aggressive recycling and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission goals. Organic waste such as green materials and food materials are recyclable through composting and mulching, and through anaerobic digestion, which can produce renewable energy and fuel. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from the decomposition of organic wastes in landfills have been identified as a significant source of emissions contributing to global climate change.

West Basin & MWD Offer FREE Landscape Transformation Classes& MWD Offers Turf Rebates
|
The Metropolitan Water District (MWD) will offer a rebate of $1 per square foot for turf removed from residential and commercial landscapes. West Basin Municipal Water District will be partnering with MWD to offer homeowners a free class designed to help transform your lawn into a more water-efficient landscape. West Basin will be hosting 5 classes throughout the South Bay. The first one was held this month, with additional classes will be offered September 2019 through March 2019.
During the class, residents will learn how to:
- Remove existing grass
- Plan a sustainable garden design
- Prepare a healthy soil for plants
- Incorporate a water-efficient irrigation system
- Plant climate-appropriate plants
- Maintain a new, drought-tolerant landscape
