Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Assembly Bill 1572, a new, water use efficiency practice that will eliminate the watering of decorative grass with drinking water on commercial properties starting in 2027.
The measure follows the temporary restrictions set as an emergency measure during the most recent drought, which also aimed to limit the use of fresh water for non-functional turf (NFT) in commercial, industrial, and institutional (CII) areas.
The West Basin Municipal Water District continues to support sustainable, climate appropriate landscapes with its ongoing grass replacement rebate programs and its water use efficiency program development. In addition, the district remains a proponent of recycled water, which is exempt from watering restrictions as it relates to NFT in CII areas, and for the service area at large.
Learn more about West Basin’s recent survey of CII water users to help create a new CII water-efficiency program that will meet the specific needs of the service area. Businesses can also participate in West Basin’s commercial grass replacement rebate program on a first-come, first-served basis.
