| | Celebrating Community and Commerce for 40 Years | | |
We invite you to join us in celebrating the 40th anniversary of the South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce. Our organization has been committed to promoting growth, supporting local businesses, and enhancing the community for four decades.
As we celebrate this important milestone, we are excited to unveil our new commemorative logo, which reflects our rich history and aspirations for the future. Furthermore, during our board retreat in January, we collectively decided to refresh our mission, vision, and core values.
We thank our members, partners, and supporters for their invaluable contributions throughout this journey.
| | Remembering Marie Spence Flickinger | | |
It is with deep sadness that the South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce continues to mourn the loss of Marie Spence Flickinger, a remarkable leader in our community. Marie's tenacious dedication to environmental advocacy, her service on the San Jacinto College Board of Trustees, her instrumental role as the founding president and chief organizer of the South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce, and her vital contributions to the establishment of the South Belt-Ellington Leader touched countless lives, families, and businesses.
Marie was a staunch advocate for the health and safety of our community, which is particularly evident in her work regarding the Brio Superfund Site. When the South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce was founded forty years ago, Marie played a crucial part in its success. She frequently took on the role of president, steering the chamber's initiatives to promote economic growth and enhance community well-being. She steadfastly supported the staff as a current board member, and her absence will be profoundly felt.
Champion, warrior, trailblazer, advocate, fearless, and influential—these words resonate deeply with Marie Flickinger's legacy. The impact she made on this community, this city, this state, and the world will be lasting, and she continues to be sorely missed.

| | Third Annual Winter Wonderland Was Snow Much Fun! | | |
On Sunday, December 22nd, the third annual Winter Wonderland occurred at the Clear Brook City MUD, drawing in a record-setting crowd of approximately 1,700 attendees. Co-hosted by the South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce, the event provided a fantastic array of activities for families to enjoy. Guests participated in games, soaked up live music, and savored various delicious food options. They could also snap photos with beloved characters like Moana, Chase, and Skye from Paw Patrol, the Ninja Turtles, Mr. and Mrs. Grinch, and Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus.
The Southeast Volunteer Firefighters showcased their fire engine, and Jerry Garcia, Harris County Constable Precinct 2, lent a hand and designed the photo setup with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Local eateries highlighted their specialties, offering everything from chips and salsa and jalapeno popper kolaches to macaroni and cheese, Italian ice, sno-cones, cotton candy, cookies, popcorn, and steaming hot chocolate topped with marshmallows.
Both kids and adults got into snowball fights, while Steve Sipes, a State Farm Insurance Agent, provided digital fingerprinting services. Betty Walter introduced adorable rescue dogs to raise awareness for her community efforts. Long lines formed, but spirits stayed high at the Clear Brook City Express train, and carolers from Crossroads United Methodist Church intertwined their merry tunes with holiday music spun by DJ Tony Basquez.
Artist Clarence Cox delighted the crowd with charming holiday balloon creations, and the Fantastic Fire Department presented another fire engine, along with snow globes and bouncy balls that kept children jumping with joy!
A wonderful group of teen volunteers from Clear Brook High School, Clear Horizons Early College High School, and J Frank Dobie High School, helped with set-up, managed the crowd, and assisted with exhibitors, restaurants, and games.
It was truly an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
The event was snow much fun!

| | Frost Bank Hosts Rodeo-Style Off the Clock | | |
The South Belt - Ellington Chamber of Commerce and the Frost Almeda Genoa Financial Center opened the saloon doors to Off the Clock, an event that felt more like a rodeo than a typical gathering. The air was filled with the soulful twang of a fiddle, expertly played by a local musician who could make the strings sing like a lonesome cowboy on the prairie.
Guests strolled in, their boots clicking on the floor, eager to kick up their heels and network in true Texan style. A boot shiner worked magic, transforming dusty leather into a gleaming finish.
As people gathered around, the atmosphere buzzed with the energy of a rodeo arena. Conversations flowed as smoothly as a well-oiled lasso, and business cards were exchanged faster than a calf at a roping contest. Many attendees dressed in their finest Western attire, mingling with the crowd while sharing tales of financial dealings and community support.
The evening perfectly blended business and pleasure, centered around a shared love of all things Texan. By the time the last note of the fiddle faded into the night, everyone agreed that this was one Off the Clock event they wouldn't forget.
Thank you, Gabriel Cordova, for your generous offer to allow Frost Bank to work their event magic and host the chamber, its members, your customers, and those who will one day join the posse!

It was a fantastic blend of networking, culture, and entertainment, all wrapped into one memorable evening.
We want to thank several individuals who made this event possible.
First to Atul Jain, who sought to share his heritage and culture with the community and had faith and confidence in our chamber to turn his dream into reality. It was our honor to say 'yes'.
We are so appreciative of San Jacinto College as our host. Kris Thompson worked with us initially and handed the baton to Amanda Fenwick while out of pocket. They, along with technology and security, were terrific!
Thanks to Wendy Drapela of One Stop Tents & Events and Sarah Ferguson, Home Bank, for their vision, which blossomed into a spectacular decor display.
We appreciate Magnolia Cajun Comfort and Himalyan Taj for providing a delicious menu and their extraordinary efforts to accommodate last-minute increases in attendance and a lenten menu.
The entertainment was top-notch, with authentic dances, a dhol player, a violinist, a flash mob, and tunes provided by DJ Riz, a production wizard.
In addition to the traditional 360-degree photo booth, a Glambot arm was installed, enhancing the experience of capturing those special Kodak moments.
We also paid tribute to Marie Flickinger, a woman who, among other things, co-founded this chamber and, when taking a moment for leisure activities, was a crackerjack gambler.
The chamber bestowed the traditional Citizen of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and Chairman's Awards.

The event began with acknowledgments, recognizing the achievements and contributions of individuals and organizations within the community. After the well-deserved awards were announced, professional dancers took center stage, dazzling the crowd with their impressive two-step and swing routines.
Local Texas artists, the Powell Brothers and Drake Milligan, took the spotlight, adding to the ambiance. They delivered performances that resonated with the audience.
On the sidelines, traditional Texas food was piled high on the plates, and I spied a few people conquering the mechanical bull.
The night was a true celebration of heritage, community, and the enduring spirit of cowboy culture.
Congratulations to Gina Spagnola, the staff, and the committee for another memorable evening.
And a big thank you to Kevin Venable for the invitation to join the AMOCO Federal Credit Union table.

What a fascinating opportunity to attend the Greater Houston Partnership's Annual Meeting as a guest of Community Health Network on Friday, January 31st!
In addition to the highlights of Houston's economic growth through 2024, two awards were given - the Bob Onstead Award and the Robert C. McNair Civic Leadership Award.
Learning about the contributions of the Love family, who received the Robert C. McNair Civic Leadership Award, was fascinating. The late Ben F. Love was the Chairman and CEO of Texas Commerce Bank. He forged a merger with Chemical Bank of New York, which became JP Morgan Chase. He was also a founding member and the first Chairman of the Greater Houston Partnership.
Lisa Holbrook, Executive Director, listened, totally immersed, as his grandson told how he raised an additional six billion dollars within less than twelve hours so the Republican National Convention could be held in Houston in 1992 rather than San Diego.
“The next best thing to the enjoyment of a good time is the recollection of it.” ~ James Lendall Basford

Anita Eakman and Lisa Holbrook enjoyed being guests of AMOCO Federal Credit Union, where the air was filled with lively conversation and hearty laughter.
Although we had a fantastic time, the true winners of the night are the students of Clear Creek ISD, who receive invaluable support from this organization and are the beneficiaries of the event's proceeds.

Lisa Holbrook, the chamber's Executive Director, attended the Clear Creek Education Foundation's Partnership Luncheon on Tuesday, February 18th.
.
Education foundations play a vital role in the success of public education. They generate private financial support to complement public funding and provide additional school resources.
These foundations fund initiatives such as classroom grants, scholarships, and extracurricular programs, creating more opportunities for students to learn and grow.
In addition, education foundations advocate for public education, improve the public's perception of schools, and build connections between educational institutions and the community. They often finance innovative programs and improvements that may not be feasible with public funds alone, thereby enhancing the overall quality of education.
Both education foundations and chambers of commerce work to improve the local economy and the community's well-being. Education foundations focus on enhancing educational outcomes, while chambers of commerce support local businesses and promote economic growth.
Thus, they ensure students are well-prepared for future careers and local businesses have access to a skilled workforce.

On Thursday, February 20th, chamber staff attended the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce's annual State of the City event as Shell Federal Credit Union guests. The gathering was held at the Pasadena Convention Center and Municipal Fairgrounds.
The chamber celebrated outstanding achievements in the business community by presenting the 2025 Business of the Year award. This year, the accolade was presented to Qualified Properties, a multi-generational family-run business that significantly contributes to the local economy and community.
Much of the event was dedicated to Pasadena's Mayor Jeff Wagner, who delivered his final State of the City address to more than 800 attendees. In his speech, he reflected on the progress made during his tenure and his commitment to the office he held for eight years.
As always, attending events organized by our fellow chambers provides valuable insights, enabling us to learn, grow, and enhance our contributions to our community.

It is now an opportune moment to don your athletic footwear or utilize your bicycle to investigate the recently upgraded Southbelt Hike and Bike Trail.
Harris County Precinct 2 has replaced the previous asphalt surface with durable concrete, enhancing all users' safety and overall experience. This development signifies the completion of Phase 2 of their trail improvement initiative, which now provides a seamless connection to the newly established Juneteenth Park Trail.
These enhancements have upgraded a total of 4.3 miles of trail. We encourage the community to visit and experience the improvements firsthand.
The South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce appreciates the area's beautification and thoroughly enjoyed the official ribbon cutting on Wednesday, February 26th, simultaneously a glorious weather day.

Lisa Holbrook, Chamber Executive Director, with her trusty tasting spoon in hand, sampled fourteen chilis along with desserts, specialty drinks, and salty popcorn, all presented with a flourish at the annual Chili Cookoff at Memorial Hermann Southeast on Friday, February 23rd.
Each sample presented a unique burst of flavors, ranging from mild as a spring breeze to spicy enough to make a rattlesnake sweat. The recipes showcased the cooks' skill and creativity.
Fortunately, as a third-year veteran, she was well-prepared, with clothing that comfortably accommodated the large amount of food she anticipated consuming.
Her taste buds were in for a workout, and by the end of the judging period, they couldn't have been happier.

Saluting our nonprofit investor, The Alliance, for another successful rendition of bingo - this time infusing high-end spirits with designer handbags on Monday, April 7th, supporting FISDCares.
The excitement was palpable as we engaged in 10 fun-filled rounds of bingo, plus two extra games that kept everyone on the edge of their seats.
Our AMOCO Federal Credit Union table laughed the evening away, sometimes one away from victory, and other times, the only daub on the card was our free spot.
This version alternated between designer handbags for the ladies and bottles of high-end spirits for the gentlemen. Door prizes were distributed between rounds, and raffle ticket winners were announced near the event's conclusion.

Dr. DeeAnn Powell devoted 30 years to the Pasadena Independent School District, starting her career as a History Teacher at Jackson Intermediate. She quickly advanced through various leadership positions, including Campus Peer Facilitator, Assistant Principal, Principal, Associate Superintendent of Campus Development, and Deputy Superintendent.
After nearly a decade of dedicated service as Superintendent of Schools, she is set to retire. Throughout her tenure, Dr. Powell tackled numerous challenges, including leading disaster recovery efforts following hurricanes and a tornado, as well as navigating the complexities of the COVID-19 pandemic, all while focusing on academic achievement and college readiness.
Under her leadership, the district experienced significant improvements and expansions, including the implementation of full-day pre-kindergarten classes in every elementary school, the launch of a K-12 Dual Language program, the fostering of personalized learning, the celebration of academic excellence, and the graduation of large classes from the Early College High School program. At her retirement reception on Tuesday, April 15th, Dr. Powell was honored for her exceptional contributions, and she credited the many mentors who supported her throughout her journey to this milestone. She made history as the first superintendent to have attended Pasadena ISD schools and the district's first female superintendent.
As she transitions into retirement, best wishes go out to Dr. Powell as she looks forward to spending more time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Her collaborative leadership style and steadfast commitment to student success have left a lasting impact on the district.

Statistics reveal that heart disease is one of the leading causes of death for women, surpassing fatalities from all cancers combined, including breast cancer.
In the United States alone, a heart attack occurs every 40 seconds, equating to approximately 805,000 incidents each year. Alarmingly, 605,000 of these cases are people experiencing a heart attack for the first time.
Medical professionals emphasize the critical importance of immediate action during a heart attack: calling 911 and being transported to the hospital via ambulance can significantly enhance the chances of survival, as this allows crucial treatment to begin while en route.
At the Go Red for Women luncheon held at the South Shore Harbour Resort on Friday, April 25th, a diverse group of physicians, nurses, and heart disease survivors convened to discuss these startling statistics and underscore the importance of heart health. The Bay Area Go Red team celebrated the remarkable milestone of over 100 years of advocacy and awareness. The event turned out to be not just educational but also a gathering, where many attendees embraced the western theme, combining heart health red with cowgirl chic.
This memorable occasion was a testament to the ongoing efforts of the American Heart Association in saving lives and promoting education about heart health risks, particularly those affecting women.
Thank you, Memorial Hermann, for inviting Lisa Holbrook as a table guest.
