our 300 years of history and life in the West Haven,
as well as light refreshments.

George Floyd, October 14, 1973 - May 25, 2020

It's been three years since the murder of George Floyd. Three years amid a pandemic; three years into what was called a time of racial reckoning.
I don't know that the reckoning has happened; certainly not in all corners of our culture and country. I've learned that it is a continual process, a continual invitation to go deeper.

And I know that many in ECCT have worked hard over the last three years to help us all act and live in ways that respect the dignity of every human being; to help us be a people who tell the truth, practice the way of love, proclaim God's dream of justice, and repair whatever is broken in our relationships.

If you haven't joined in that work yet, or if you have and want more, the following gatherings offer some possibilities for your first or next step.
June 3rd Racial Healing, Justice and Reconciliation meeting followed by the Middletown Pride Parade

There will be a Racial Healing, Justice and Reconciliation Ministry Network gathering on June 3, 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Directly after will be a meet up to attend the Middletown Pride parade with Bishop Jeff.

June 3, RHJR Gathering: 10am – 12:30pm
What: a focused discussion on social and racial justice resources and strategies to support young people and the young at heart. The Rev. Margie Baker, Associate Rector at St. John’s, West Hartford will be our featured speaker, and participants will be invited to share their thoughts and resources as well
Where: Church of Holy Trinity; 381 Main St., Middletown
Do you have a piece of non-tradtional
sacred art to share?

The ECCT Racial Healing, Justice & Reconciliation Network and the Office of Mission Advocacy, Racial Justice, and Reconciliation seek to create space to exhibit diverse and non-traditional images of the sacred available across ECCT. It is our hope that this effort serves as a catalyst for deeper reflection about the importance of diversifying sacred images as an embodiment of our collective spirituality.

Our first step is to hear from parishes, intentional communities, and individuals about artwork and iconography which already exist in Connecticut. Please support this effort by completing this form and forwarding it to others who may be interested in joining this initiative. We expect the exhibit to be at the Commons for a period of three months and would therefore need images of sacred art to be on loan for this length of time.

The second step is hosting an exhibit of some of these non-traditional images. The opening reception will include a presentation by Kelly Latimore, noted contemporary icon writer. (Latimore's icon of Christ the Mother Hen based on Luke 13:34 illustrates this article.)

Focus on life in New Haven
Thank you St. Luke's for hosting the event, Stay in the City.

We had a good turn out of 12 people representing the city's Climate Action office, Trinity Episcopal Church, St. John's Episcopal Church, the New Haven Zen Center, the Amistad Catholic Worker house, and the homelessness advocacy group UACT.

We shared gifts we had to respond to environmental issues in our city and created a systems map. We connected how the city shares information about cost-saving opportunities to transition to cleaner energy for homes and business with the potential of working through church and community group networks. From the other side, we looked at how those experiencing homelessness seek resources, whether the train station, the now-dismantled tent city, or shelters and food pantries. We thought about how community gardens, community greenspaces, and neighborhood networks of trust catch people when city services cannot.
We identified several issues to improve the system that groups expressed interest in working on going forward:
1. Cultivating the regional church network to share opportunities and resources offered through the city for energy transition and disaster response.
2. Working with the Amistad House on Tiny Houses (pallet homes) to provide quick and stable refuge for those experiencing homelessness.
3. Building up neighborhood networks of trust that can care for their local places and respond to environmental and social crises.
4. Advocating for more public restrooms in New Haven.
5. Advocating for a zoning change allowing more Single Room Occupancy.
6. Advocating for a public shower system.

If you are interested in working on any of these issues, please let me know at [email protected] and I can connect you with those who attended the event.
And we know there is life in the
SC Region beyond New Haven!
Did you see the story on World Bee Day that featured St. John's in North Guilford? https://www.episcopalct.org/a-prayerful-life-is-the-bees-knees/

Zion, North Branford hosted a hike and Holy Eucharist as a part of Bishop Ahrens' visit with them on May 7th.

Church of Good Shepherd in Shelton has had a free little pantry for the last couple of years. Trinity, Seymour has invited them to join in with Christ Church, Ansonia for a "PantryPalooza" on June 10th.

Todd Lane of St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church reported that that they received a trunk load of items from St. Andrew's, Northford, as well as items from Trinity on the Green, St. John's North Haven and funds from Christ and the Epiphany, East Haven. They collect year-round, so he is glad to hear of any items in the future. Todd wrote us:

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all parishioners who participated in the collection drive for the New Haven, CT Ukrainian American Humanitarian Aid Fund, INC. Your ongoing support and contributions mean a lot to us. The support you provided will aid us in fulfilling our mission of supporting the innocent victims of war in Ukraine. With your donations and those of others, we would be able to transform the lives of so many people.

O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
