GROWTH....
By Jenifer Alcorn
|
Growth is hard. Growth means changing, evolving, getting better. Most times, growth is shadowed by adversity before victory! The Shelter has seen big changes in the last year. As a "working" shelter manager, I have been at the shelter everyday cleaning kennels, medicating animals, and making decisions that are sometimes difficult. I wouldn't change the growth over the last year for anything! Thanks to all that support our Shelter and our mission to SAVE LIVES!

South Coast Humane Board Of Directors
Welcomes our
NEW BOARD MEMBERS

|
 |
Judy has been in the banking and mortgage finance industry for over 40 years. She currently serves the local community as a nationwide mortgage licensed loan officer for Mason-McDuffie Mortgage Corporation.
Judy lives in lovely Brookings, Oregon with her husband Ken and their furry rescue kids. When not working Judy enjoys supporting the community with her “What’s Happening in Brookings, Oregon” Facebook forum, gardening and practicing Permaculture, serving on the South Coast Humane Society Board, playing Ukulele and just basking in nature and enjoying life on the beautiful Oregon Coast.

 |
I would like to think of myself as a Brookings local, but I technically grew up in Gasquet. I have lived in Brookings since middle school. I have always had a love for animals, so when the opportunity presented itself to be in business for myself and to have it be focused around animals... I jumped on the opportunity!! Running Woof’s Dog Bakery has been an amazing experience and I love getting to meet dogs and their owners. My favorite hobby is playing music. I’ve been playing guitar since I was 10 and love continuing to learn my instrument. I’m really excited to be a part of this wonderful organization, and looking forward to working with everyone!

Thank you
Richard Wilson!!!
By Jenifer Alcorn
|
|
One of our favorite "adopter parents," Richard "Dick" Wilson surprised us with an amazing gift for the animals of South Coast Humane Society!!! Dick donated enough funds to purchase one year worth of food for our dogs and cats! We serve our animals Grain Free Taste of The Wild! Donations like these allow our shelter to continue our outreach programs and provide the best possible nutrition for the dogs and cats under our care. The grain free food has helped many problems that we were having with digestion and skin/hair- THANK YOU DICK!

PAWS ON PARADE 2019
By Jenifer Alcorn
|
|
It was a beautiful day for the 80th annual Azalea festival this year. It wasn't too hot or too cold! The dogs were well behaved and loved the attention of being in the spot light. We had great diversity in our dogs that went to the parade! From left to right. Buster, a beautiful 3 year old golden mix, who was rescued from Shasta County. Buster has since been adopted after being seen in the parade. Scarlet, a 2 year old husky with one eye, who was rescued from Lancaster County. Scarlet has also been adopted after her parade debut! Jackson, a 3 year old Doberman/Shepherd mix, rescued from Stanislaus County. Jackson has been adopted too!! Last, but certainly not least, Aria a 7 year old Pitty mixed with sugar and spice. Aria is still waiting for her forever home. LJ, our secretary suited up as the SCHS dog this year. Mary Wood, an avid supporter of SCH, made her own cat suit to walk in the parade and represent all the adoptable felines at SCHS! Below are the following community partners that sponsored our awesome T-shirts! They are still available at the Shelter for only $10.00!!! Thank you to all!!

Choosing the Right Treat for Your Dog
by Jake Brattain, Board Member
There are many things to consider when it comes to finding a treat for your dog. I am going to give you a few tips to help you pick out the perfect treat for your pup! The sections we are covering are type of treat, Ingredients, and Allergens/Diet Restrictions.
Type of Treat
When deciding what type of treat you need, you should think about what situation you are going to be using it in. Some examples may include training, reward, or time consuming. Treats come in many varieties, so we’ll look at just a few. Training treats are usually going to be small, easy to eat, and extremely appetizing for your dog. You’ll want something that your dog will do basically anything for. Usually you would like them on the softer side so that your dog can eat them quickly and get back to training. One other consideration is to watch the calorie count. During a training session you can burn through a lot of treats, so it’s a good idea to try to minimize the number of calories your dog is consuming. Sometimes you need to really reward your dog for good behavior. You are saying to your dog, “I’m really proud of you!” so these treats should be tasty and last longer than a training treat. Some examples would be jerky, animal parts, or a biscuit. These types of treats are usually going to be high calorie, so use them in moderation. Time consuming treats are when
you
need a break, or just want to give your dog a fun activity to work on. Animal parts/bones, rubber toys with treats inserted, and nylon chews would be examples of these. Learning what kind of chewer you have is very important when selecting the size and strength of your time consuming treat. It is always important to monitor your dog so you can take the treat away if they are consuming it in an unsafe way. I usually recommend sticking with a treat that is fully edible/digestible to try and curb any digestion issues, but again every dog is different!
Ingredients
Ingredients in pet products are a very broad and debated topic, but there are few general things to look out for. Being able to decipher and understand what all the ingredients are is probably the best advice I can give. Google can be your best friend when it comes to this. I recommend picking something with simple, whole ingredients if possible. Treats containing high percentages of meat can be rich, and if your dog is not used to them they can cause some digestive problems. You can always incorporate them slowly into your dog’s diet.
Use your best judgement when looking at ingredients, if you are unsure about anything, look it up! You can always compare with another brand of similar treats. We are lucky that now a days there are many options out there for every type of dog and diet!
Allergens/Diet Restrictions
This ties in with ingredients and is always an important consideration. If you know your dog has an intolerance or allergy to a specific ingredient then it goes without saying that you should avoid them in your treats. Even small amounts of these ingredients can add up quickly when you are doling out treats to your dog. Allergy tests are available but can be expensive. If you find that your dog is having issues with a treat whether it be skin/coat or digestive, discontinue use. Some common allergens are specific types of animal proteins, grains, fruits, or vegetables. You can always try and figure out what is causing issues by using a process of elimination. One other consideration would be any restrictions on your dogs’ diet. For example, dogs with kidney issues are usually recommend a diet that is low in protein, so when you are looking for treats you will want to keep that in mind. Most treats will have percentages of protein, fat, fiber, moisture and calories listed on the packaging.
Final Thoughts
If you ever have any concerns or questions your veterinarian is always a great place to check with. Learning your dogs’ habits, behaviors, and breed specific considerations is extremely important when selecting the right treat, especially when it comes to longer lasting chew treats. A veterinarian will always have great advice in these areas.
Always use the tools you have available to inform yourself before you make your decision. Whether it be Google, a knowledgeable neighbor or your veterinarian. I always recommend you do your own research so that you feel confident in the choices you are making. What works for one dog might not work at all for your pup.
At the end of the day I think we all want the best for our furry friends, and choosing the right treat for the right situation can make a huge difference in both of your lives!

BENJI'S STORY...continues
By Jenifer Alcorn
|
|
Benji was abandoned next to a school yard in Modesto, California. This picture was taken of poor Benji. He was left tied to a pole with a bag of food next to him with his name on it. Someone took a picture and posted in on facebook. The post read "stay away aggressive dog." That was not true. Benji was abandoned and scared. He was thrown away by someone he trusted. The volunteers at Stanislaus Shelter knew he needed rehabilitation. He needed RESCUE. They reached out to me at South Coast Humane. They told me they would be sending Benji to a trainer to help him learn to trust humans again. He would also need help having a leash on. He was sent to a trainer for two months and the transformation was amazing...BUT the journey was far from over....
|
|
I Received Benji late one evening and I could tell he had slipped back to being fearful and needed some de-compression time. I worked with Benji and finally was able to put his leash on and off and take him for a walk around the block. He has an interesting personality- he is very "growly!" When he likes what you're doing he growls- when he plays he growls- and that can be a bit intimidating! Very quickly after Benji arrived, a nice man came in and was interested in him. I explained his personality and the man simply said..."I think he's purring!" The man was not afraid of Benji and decided to adopt him!
|
|
This is where the story continues...and we can learn from every failure and success. Benji grew so attached to his new owner that he became protective of him and didn't want to share his attention with the owner's wife. Unfortunately, the man had to return Benji to the shelter. A dog like Benji needs a mature home, with strong pack leadership. Everyone in the family needs to be able to walk the dog, feed the dog, and let him know where his place in the pack is. Many times we treat our dogs as equals and that is confusing to them. Just as a child needs to understand their place in the family in regards to obedience and respect, so do our dogs. Benji will be a great addition to a seasoned family. There are no failures- we just learn how to better place our adoptable animals. If you are interested in meeting Benji- Please come by!

"FOSTER TO ADOPT"
By Jenifer Alcorn
Many people ask what does it mean to "foster to adopt?" Our Foster to adopt program allows us to get animals out of the shelter while they are waiting for their spay/neuter service. We are able to provide that service to our animals and public animals in our Spay/Neuter clinics, which are held three times monthly. We believe there is no reason for a healthy animal to stay in our shelter for two weeks waiting to go home, when a family wants to provide them a safe environment while waiting for these services! We require a completed application. If you rent, we request landlord approval. If you have owned a pet currently or previously, we do a veterinary reference. Once those checks are completed, the foster family leaves a REFUNDABLE cash deposit equal to the adoption fee- in addition to the adoption fee (cats $65/$65 dogs $100/$100) Once the services are complete, you are refunded the deposit and the animal is now considered ADOPTED!

A Happy Ending
By Jenifer Alcorn
On March 29th, Mike Carpenter went missing near Eight Mile Mountain. Mike had been on an adventure hike in Oregon. His dog was located and South Coast Humane housed her until Mike was located. Thankfully, Mike and his beautiful dog were re-united before he traveled back to Colorado to family. South Coast Humane was glad to be able to help out!
