Guided by consultant Laura Soparlo, board members explored their strategic role and responsibilities, strengthening their ability to lead and govern effectively. The day also featured a hands-on beading workshop with Jill Ruep, Métis beading artist and entrepreneur, who shared culture, storytelling, and creativity through her art.

Staff Grant Tip of the Month – Common Grant Mistakes

“The two most common mistakes I see are that the budget doesn’t make sense and the project lacks detail, reviewers can’t make an assessment — clarity is critical – remember that even though you meet criteria, your proposal is often being rated against other submissions.”

Key Points:

  • Connect the Narrative and Budget: Every activity described in your proposal should be clearly reflected in the budget. Unexplained costs or missing line items make it difficult for reviewers to understand your project.
  • Provide Enough Detail: Assume the reviewer has no background knowledge of your organization or project. Clear descriptions help funders assess feasibility, readiness, and impact.
  • Avoid Vagueness: Steer clear of broad language and “miscellaneous” categories. Specific details build credibility and confidence in your ability to manage the project and funds.
