Dear Friend,

This month, we are so proud to congratulate our grantee Dr. Armen Henderson, to celebrate the South Florida Anchor Alliance (SFAA) working group members, to share the 2024 SFAA Year in Review, and to highlight two grantees that are expanding access to healthcare.

And, we are delighted to announce the 2026 Black Health Summit! We look forward to gathering on June 16, 2026 for a day filled with inspiration and action.

Thank you for your collaboration.

Sincerely,

Loreen Chant

Black Health Summit in Action : Armen Henderson Receives Healthcare Hero Award

As we continue to elevate the work of our Black Health Summit In Action, we’re proud to celebrate our grantee Dr. Armen Henderson, MD, MBA, general internal medicine faculty member at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and founder of Dade County Street Response (DCSR)—who has just been named the 2025 Health Care Professional winner at the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Health Care Heroes Awards!

Dr. Henderson’s bold, community-rooted approach to care exemplifies the kind of grassroots leadership the Health Foundation is proud to support. Through DCSR, he is working to close long-standing health access gaps in Liberty City, one of Miami’s most underserved neighborhoods. The clinic provides free medical care, case management, legal advocacy, and health education to low-income, working residents, many of whom fall outside the traditional healthcare system.

By investing in efforts like DCSR, the Health Foundation is helping bring the mission of past Black Health Summits beyond the stage and into the neighborhoods where real-time challenges are being met with real solutions. Black Health Summit In Action puts health equity into motion—on the ground, in partnership, and with lasting impact. Congratulations to all of this year’s Health Care Heroes—and a special salute to Dr. Henderson for showing us what transformative, community-driven leadership looks like in action!

Shaping the Next Chapter of the South Florida Anchor Alliance

On May 15th, at the Frost Science Museum, the South Florida Anchor Alliance held a Strategy Workshop. With more than 40 leaders, partners, and changemakers in the room, it was a powerful gathering that marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the South Florida Anchor Alliance! This work has always been led by our anchor institutions—hospitals, universities, and other major organizations committed to hiring, buying, and investing locally. For the past six years, the Health Foundation of South Florida has proudly served as the backbone, helping to coordinate and support these collective efforts. Now, as we move into a new phase of even deeper alignment and shared ownership, the momentum is real—and the opportunity is greater than ever.

Workshop highlights included:  Insightful panel discussions with national leaders from the Healthcare Anchor Network; honest and productive table conversations on cross-sector collaboration, policy, and priorities, and real-time feedback that will help shape our 2025–2030 Blueprint for Action. A growing commitment to collaborative workforce housing solutions; stronger alignment between procurement strategies and local economic development; and a renewed focus on long-term, system-wide impact were the key themes of the session. We’re grateful to every attendee, panelist, facilitator, and working group member who is helping drive this movement forward.

South Florida Anchor Alliance Releases the 2024 Year In Review

Reflecting on the past year, we are proud of our collective achievements in fostering a more thriving South Florida. In 2024, the Health Foundation of South Florida, through the South Florida Anchor Alliance (SFAA), had over $3 million in active grants and program support, reaching close to 2,000 local and small businesses and providing more than 200 students with scholarships for health care related anchor jobs.

We remain committed to accelerating connections between procurement opportunities and local and small businesses and we are focused on building a strong talent pipeline to ensure the region’s workforce is prepared to meet the evolving job demands of the anchors.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our shared mission.  Together, we are making a lasting impact on our community.

Health Council of South Florida Expands Access to Health Insurance

When more people have access to health insurance, they’re more likely to seek preventive care, manage chronic conditions, and live healthier lives. That’s why expanding coverage is key to advancing health equity. The Health Foundation is proud to support the Health Council of South Florida (HCSF) and its Connect to Health Miami initiative, an on-the-ground effort to help residents enroll in affordable health insurance through the Affordable Care Act Marketplace. Since its launch, 67% of enrollees have received tax credits, lowering monthly premiums. Residents now have affordable coverage and peace of mind, and enrollment counselors are removing barriers and providing free, trusted support.

As Nicole Marriott, President & CEO of HCSF, put it: “Every enrollment is a step toward a healthier community. Our effort is breaking barriers and creating sustainable pathways to better health.”

Health Foundation-Funded Collaborative Expands Healthcare Access in Monroe County

In Monroe County, where provider shortages and geographic barriers have long challenged healthcare access, sustained investment makes a measurable difference. Since 2020, the Health Foundation has provided $2.26 million to support the Monroe County Access to Care Collaborative, led by Florida Keys Area Health Education Center, Good Health Clinic, and Womankind. The return on investment is remarkable: $330,333 in annual funding generated over $6.2 million in healthcare services provided each year; patient reach increased to nearly 11,000 annually; and non-emergency wait times dropped by 82%, from 42 days to 7.5 days.

As Executive Director Kate Banick of Good Health Clinic shared, “Providing accessible healthcare to those who need it most is an immeasurable gift to those we serve. Thanks to the ongoing commitment of the Health Foundation, we are able to build a stronger, healthier future for our community."

This is how lasting change begins—with investment, partnership, and persistence. And we're just getting started.
