MEET OUR DOCTOR

Franccessa L. Brettschneider, MD

Dr. Brettschneider is a board certified pathologist and dermatopathologist. She reads our biopsy slides and renders diagnoses for our onsite laboratory. Originally from Baltimore she graduated from both University of Maryland Baltimore County with majors in french language and Biology and the University of Maryland Medical School . She became a South Floridian when she completed her Pathology Residency and Dermatopathology Fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach. She loves correlating histologic patterns with clinical disease to help her colleagues offer the best treatments for their patients

In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and three cane corso dogs.

SEBORRHEIC KERATOSIS

A seborrheic keratosis is a benign (non-cancerous) skin growth that is very common in adults (over 90% of people over 60 years have at least one of them). People tend to make more as time goes on and there is a hereditary component. The growths can range in size, color, can be flat or raised, smooth or warty. Seborrheic keratoses can occur anywhere on the body except palms and soles and look like they are stuck on the surface of the skin similar to a barnacle. These growths can become bothersome and there are different ways to remove them. The most common treatments include using cryotherapy to freeze the lesions off and shave removal. These options may lead to permanent scarring of the skin potentially causing the skin to hyperpigment (become darker) or hypopigment (become lighter). Therefore a new treatment was FDA approved called Eskata to remove the lesions easily and without scarring.

FEATURED PROCEDURE

Eskata

Eskata is the first and only FDA approved topical treatment for seborrheic keratoses. This topical treatment uses prescription strength (40%) hydrogen peroxide and is applied in the office to each individual lesion. Patient’s may experience mild stinging when the medication is applied. After the lesions are treated the area may turn red, crust, swell and scale. The lesions will gradually crust and fall off over a period of three weeks. Lesions require two treatments for complete clearance and thicker lesions may require more treatments.
