Following its recent rollout of a three-cart collection system, the City of South Gate is pleased to announce several key achievements in organics recycling and sustainability efforts.
On January 1, 2023, the City launched its three-cart collection system, providing a simple way for residents to separate organics, recyclable materials and landfilled trash. In doing so, the City met the requirements of Senate Bill (SB) 1383 and took valuable steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions caused by landfilled organic materials.
In just a few months, the new collection system has produced significant results. From January to April, 1,654 tons of mixed organics were recovered in South Gate. Instead of contributing to harmful emissions as they would in a landfill, these organic materials were recycled into organic products—like compost and mulch—that benefit local businesses, residents and spaces.
As a result, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been reduced substantially. In the first quarter of this year, 2,753 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2e) were avoided as a result of organic waste diverted from the landfill*. Reducing GHG emissions not only improves the immediate health of the local environment, but also creates a more sustainable future for generations to come.
South Gate residents and businesses have a key role to play in creating a bright future for the community. Properly sorting waste has a significant impact, both immediately and long-term. The following lists detail what can and cannot be added to your organics bin:
