South Gate Police Department Citizen Academy Graduates

The South Gate Police Department provided 18 community members with an inside look into local law enforcement through a comprehensive, 25-hour training course. This course is designed to give citizens an overview of the police department’s function, staff, responsibilities, and operational procedures. The academy classes were presented by police employees who were chosen from various assignments within the police department. Activities for the participants in the Citizen Academy ranged from classroom discussion to interactive role playing. The participants in the Citizen Academy were exposed to various areas and aspects of law enforcement that included Dispatch, Narcotics Enforcement, Jail Operations, Traffic Enforcement, Gangs, Investigations, K9, and S.W.A.T.

The class was successful in educating the graduates in the day-to-day operations of the police department and providing an insight into the framework of what comprises the South Gate Police Department.

Artist Open Call

The South Gate Museum and Art Gallery is looking for artists to showcase in their next art exhibit Process/Proceso.

The creative process is the journey an artist embarks on to bring an idea to life. The gallery will highlight and showcase your creative process.

Share what you haven't completed yet, what you're still working on, or what you're just playing with. Consider your ideations, unedited takes, rough drafts, or works revisited repeatedly, as artwork in and of themselves

Create Your Own Kitchen Pail

Properly sorting kitchen scraps is an important element of organics recycling—but one that may feel difficult or inconvenient if you don’t have a place to store those scraps. A kitchen pail is a great solution that allows you to easily separate organic waste from trash and recyclables!

If you don’t yet have a kitchen pail, you can easily create your own by repurposing the following items into a food scrap container:

  • Any resealable food package or container (coffee tin, deli or to-go container, glass jar, etc.)
  • Brown paper bag
  • Large bowl with lid
  • Zipping freezer bag

Keeping your kitchen scraps and food waste out of the landfill is a simple yet highly effective way to help your community and protect the environment. Learn more at SortWasteSG.org.
