First Breakfast Connections of 2025 Lands in Lancaster

The first Breakfast Connections event of the year was held April 24 in Lancaster, co-hosted by the Cornwall SDG Business Enterprise Centre and the Township of South Glengarry. SDG Warden Lang and South Glengarry Mayor McDonald welcomed the attendees before introducing the guest speaker, Adam Gibeau, the owner of Digital Dorsal.

During his presentation, Adam emphasized the significance of digital tools for businesses. He highlighted that a strong online presence can help attract customers and explained that digital advertising is often more cost-effective than print advertisements.

We extend a heartfelt “thank you” to the Cornwall and SDG Counties Business Enterprise Centre for selecting our Township to co-host this inaugural Breakfast Connections event of the year.

Ferme Butte & Bine's Rural Café & Bakery Opens

Business owners Emeric and Sylviane welcomed MP Eric Duncan, SDG Counties Warden Martin Lang, Mayor Lachlan McDonald, CAO Jamie Fawthrop, SDG Counties’ Acting Manager of Economic Development Karina Belanger, and EDO Jennifer Treverton to their newly constructed rural café and bakery on Thursday, May 1st, ahead of their official opening on May 4th.

The bright and open space, filled with the aroma of freshly baked artisan sourdough breads and brewed coffee, created a warm and inviting atmosphere. Displays filled with baked goods tempted guests who came to congratulate Emeric and Sylviane on the successful completion of this ambitious project, allowing them to enjoy treats alongside a hot cup of coffee at one of the cozy tables. The café also features a selection of locally sourced artisan goods.

This project received partial support from the SDG Counties' Regional Incentives Program (RIP) grants. We highly recommend visiting Emeric and Sylviane at 5857 Glen Brook Road, Williamstown, to experience their café.

Government Updates

Ontario Unlocking Free Trade Within Canada

On April 16, 2025, the Ontario government announced their plan to introduce the Protect Ontario through Free Trade within Canada Act to unlock free trade and labour mobility within Canada, aiming to create new job opportunities and attract investment by removing trade barriers and red tape. If passed, this legislation includes mutual recognition of goods and services, streamlined labour mobility rules, and direct-to-consumer alcohol sales, supported by a $50 million Ontario Together Trade Fund and partnerships with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

Ontario Investing $1.3 Billion to Protect Manufacturing Workers and Jobs

Announced May 5, Ontario is investing $1.3 billion over three years to enhance and expand the Ontario Made Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit, aiming to lower costs for businesses investing in manufacturing and processing.

This initiative will support job creation and economic growth by increasing the tax credit rate from 10% to 15% for Canadian-controlled private corporations and expanding eligibility for non-Canadian-controlled private corporations, helping Ontario's manufacturing sector to support investments in Ontario.

Ontario Investing $1 Billion in Skills Development Fund to Protect Workers

New funding announced today will support workers in the face of U.S. tariffs and economic uncertainty

Ontario is expanding its Skills Development Fund (SDF) by nearly $1 billion over the next three years, bringing the total to $2.5 billion. This funding will help train and reskill Ontario workers, including those directly impacted by layoffs that result from tariffs.

Enhanced training programs and upgraded facilities will ensure impacted workers have the necessary support to find good-paying jobs and help strengthen Ontario’s economy.
