ET & IT Lego Project
For their mid-term, both second-year Engineering Technology (ET) and Information Technology (IT) students were assigned a visual technical writing project that required them to create a set of assembly instructions for a LEGO ® block project. The purpose of this assignment was to help students to improve their communication skills and to present concise instructions their audience in a clear, and easily understandable way.

Their writing skills were tested when upon completion of the assignment, the students had to make presentations to South Hills faculty, staff, and fellow students. LEGOS and instructions were provided to audience members, and they were asked to assemble their object based on the electronic slideshow. Feedback was provided to the students regarding the ease of following their instructions from beginning to end. Through audience comments and observation of the challenges they faced putting together the items, students learned how they could improve their instructions for the future.

South Hills Students Give Back at Harper's
Annual Benefit Tournament
Harpers 4 th Annual Benefit Tournament was held last month. This annual softball tournament is held to help a child within the Lewistown community who has medical necessities to benefit.

This year’s beneficiary was Talynn (Tally) Snook, who has been battling Leukemia. When Brandi Owens, second year Medical Assistant Student at South Hills School of Business & Technology’s Lewistown Campus, found out about the benefit for Tally, she informed her classmates and they decided to come up with a way to contribute. The Health Careers Club at South Hills tries to donate to local events/causes once a month. The club members worked collaboratively to put together a care package for Tally that was full of items that she adores to present to her at the tournament.

CJ Students Learn Blood Splatter Analysis
Criminal Justice students at our State College campus learned about Blood Splatter Analysis in their Forensic Science class. During the experiment, they dropped simulated blood onto paper from different heights and angles. The activity helped them to identify patterns that indicate angle, velocity, height/distance from the surface, and other factors they could encounter while doing a crime scene investigation.

Blood Wars Blood Drive
Congratulations to the Blood Wars winners and THANK YOU to everyone who donated!
We held an  American Red Cross Blood Drive at our State College campu s, which was turned into a blood wars event.

South Hills Blood Wars are annual friendly competitions typically between our campuses to help motivate donors and increase the number of blood donations.

Since State College was the only campus to host a blood drive yesterday, we asked donors to represent their programs for the Blood Wars. Alumni help was sought and public walk-ins were welcomed, as well.

Turnout was amazing, and the Red Cross staff said we exceeded our collection goal! Our Administrative Professiona l & Business Administration–Management & Marketing programs tied for most donations.
11th Annual Infusive Design
Our Graphic Arts (GA) Program recently held their 11th annual gallery show, “ Infusive Design,” at the Art Alliance of Central PA. This event was started in 2006 by GA Program Coordinator, Ray Liddick, and is designed to showcase work created by members of the graduating GA class. This year’s selections included a variety of projects ranging from posters, publication designs, and illustrations to 3-D packaging designs and advertising campaigns. All work on display was created as part of the project-oriented Graphic Arts two year AST program.

Graphic Arts instructor, Jim Colbert, commented “ Infusive Design is a wonderful opportunity for the students to select and display the “best of the best” of their work. It’s truly a delight from the faculty perspective to watch the growth these students over the course of two years, and it’s very rewarding to see their enthusiasm and watch them shine during this special evening.”
The poster for Infusive Design was designed by 2018 graduate Nichole Yatta, currently employed as a graphic designer for Chamber of Business and Industry of Centre County (CBICC).
