DEVELOPMENT

Pizza on Polk?
What about that rumor that  Roots Pizza is coming to Polk & Dearborn? The most we can say this month is that the rumor is not completely baseless.

Crain's Chicago Business had a story saying a two-level pizzeria would be built on top of the "micro-apartments" project planned for that site-a project that fell through months ago. The owners of Roots say in a July 5 email that "We do have plans to build a Roots Pizza location at that address and we are working on financing... . The micro-apartment project that was originally slated did fall through."

A stand-alone restaurant on such an expensive site seems unlikely, but we'll wait to hear more.

Essex "Winter Garden"

New renderings have been released for the new winter garden at the Essex on the Park, the 56-story building now under construction at 820 S. Michigan. "The design team was inspired Winter Garden- Essex to capture within the building a slice of the park beyond," Paul Alessandro, partner at Hartshorne Plunkard

Architecture (HPA) told Curbed Chicago. "If Grant Park is an oasis of green carved out of the city proper, the atrium is an oasis of green carved out of the new Essex on the Park tower."

Plans Released for Former Ickes site
Ald. Dowell's June 13th Town Hall included a presentation on Southbridge, the name being used for redevelopment of the 11-acre former Harold Ickes Homes site at Cermak and State. The new mixed-income project will include substantial ground-floor retail space along State St.

Eventually, the project is expected to include 770 apartments and 107 market-rate townhouses and condos.
