City Responds to COVID-19 Outbreak
A Letter from the City Manager
With the global spread of a new strain of the coronavirus and the disease it causes, COVID-19, there has been great uncertainty over these past few weeks.

Much remains unknown about this virus, but what we know for sure is that it continues to spread at a very fast pace, and avoiding human contact and washing your hands often is your best protection right now.

In response to the threat posed by COVID-19, on March 16, the City of South Miami declared a state of emergency – an extraordinary and immediate action that was required to protect the public health, safety, and welfare of the people of our community.

Since that time, South Miami City Hall has been closed to the public. But please know that City Manager-Designate Shari Kamali and I have been here, working diligently to confront the day-to-day challenges that continue arise, with a constant eye on the overall health and well-being of our city.

City Staff
Out of an abundance of caution, we quickly deployed non-essential city employees to work remotely at home, while mission-critical staff remains in place at City Hall. We all stand ready to continue to do the important work of local government – and to respond swiftly to the needs of our resident and local businesses.

Please also note that the South Miami Police will continue patrols and services as usual. Residents can report non-emergency issues to 305-663-6301 or via email . In an emergency, always dial 9-1-1.

Stay Informed
We cannot emphasize enough the importance of closely following state, national, and international advisories at this time, so that we can all continue to do our best at limiting the spread of the virus.

But in an emergency event of this magnitude, it is equally important – perhaps even more so – that your city communicates directly you. This is why today we launch South Miami City News & Updates to focus on the news, notices, and advisories that most affect us right here in our own community.

e-News Updates
South Miami City News & Updates is being shared with existing subscribers of email lists maintained by various municipal departments including Police, Parks & Recreation, and the Building Department – as well as by our City Commissioners.

If you want to make sure your email address is included, feel free to subscribe here . But please note, by sending us your e-mail address, it becomes public record and may be acquired by non-government interests. All advisories and updates will also be available on the city website.

Important Resources
The City of South Miami continues to monitor and follow the guidelines and mandates from the Florida Department of Health ( FDoH ) and the Centers for Disease Control ( CDC ) – so we will do our best to share with you much of that information, as well.

Confirmed cases are increasing daily, so let’s please just remember to stand with each other, remain calm, and work together help slow the spread of the virus. By doing so, we will come out of this crisis better and stronger as a community. Please stay safe!
