Dear South School Community,

We had a fantastic after Thanksgiving week at SES!!! The children were very much looking forward to two wonderful South School traditions: the Winterfest and Book Fair! A huge thank you goes out to all the parent volunteers who made this all happen on this past Saturday, December 2nd, especially Moriah Rogers, Mary Kate Paris, Jen Reid and Karen Monti. These events were a smashing success again this year and are such important events in our village! We are also grateful to Alison Chamberlain and Holly Enders who co-chair the Cultural Committee and the PTO for their sponsorship of the South Shore Ballet on Thursday. All of the students enjoyed seeing other students from SES and other schools dance various scenes from the famous holiday ballet, The Nutcracker. The director even had over 500 students up and dancing some of the steps of the show!

Quote of the week:   Because I care for myself, I care for others! (empathy tool again this week)

NEW News for you...
  • This week, December 3-7, at South School we are participating in Inclusion Week, an annual international event that acknowledges the hard work and commitment of teachers, administrators, students and families in making their schools more inclusive, and thereby significantly contributing to the development of a more inclusive society. This is a time when our village can continue the journey toward providing a quality education to all children regardless of differences in ability, gender, ethnicity, language, and health status. In addition to what we usually do to be sure all students feel included and welcomed, we are calling this the Rainbow Kaleidoscope of Kindness Week. Students will be doing various additional activities (depending on grade level), and all classrooms will continue to celebrate differences and discuss the special qualities that each and every child possesses. We will culminate the week by wearing our grade level colors on Friday, December 7, which will represent our special kaleidoscope of kindness.
  • Last Wednesday, the fifth graders were an excellent audience at the Company Theater's production of Oliver which happens to star former SES student, Matthew O'Conner.
  • On Thursday, December 6, we will have our first parent Focus Group from 9-10. Parents/guardians who were invited were chosen completely at random. We will also have a student focus group later in the month. We always love to hear what everyone has to say!
  • Outerwear Drive: Thank you for all of the donations to the Outerwear Drive this week! Your kindness is greatly appreciated! We are grateful to the Community Outreach Committee and three fourth graders: Sidney Schneider, Chloe Mankes, and Brooke Lynch who helped to organize this drive!
  • This Wednesday, December 5, early release day is set aside as a Conference Day for teachers /parents and guardians. Please contact Mrs. Thompson in the school office to schedule a conference if you wish. Please be aware that it is also possible to meet with teachers at any other time, just contact them directly to find a mutually convenient time. Just a reminder that ALL early Releases are at noon with no lunch served this year! Please send in a substantial snack.
  • Report Cards: Grade five (on three terms) will come home on December 7 and Grades K-4 (on two terms) will come home on February 1.
  • On Friday, December 14th we will have a Patriots' Spirit Day.
Have a great week!!!  ME and LJ (:
