Sen. Braun's climate bill passes Senate
A climate bill sponsored by Indiana Republican Senator, Mike Braun, passed with broad bipartisan support last week. The Growing Climate Solutions Act of 2021 was first introduced last year, but stalled. It establishes a voluntary greenhouse gas certification program that helps farmers and other landowners receive credit for preventing, reducing, or mitigating greenhouse gas emissions or carbon sequestration. The bill -- which racked up endorsements from climate and pro-farm groups alike -- is seen as a step forward by experts like Purdue Climate Change Research Center Professor Jeff Dukes. But he cautions those steps are relatively small and require little political capital from Republicans. Energy Department releases request for information on electric vehicle grid integration
The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), and DOE’s Office of Electricity (OE) on June 15 announced a request for information (RFI) seeking feedback from industry, academia, research laboratories, government agencies, and other stakeholders on issues related to integrating electric vehicles (EVs) with the grid. Electrification is a key part of our strategy to decarbonize the transportation sector. As the EV market continues to grow, it is important to examine the potential impact on grid reliability and resiliency as a result of that integration and to ensure we achieve our goal of a carbon-free electricity sector by 2035.
GUEST COMMENTARY: ...With liberty & environmental justice for all
We all know actions speak louder than words, particularly when it comes to issues of equality. Saying you support equality — in your personal life, corporate decisions or legislative actions — means nothing if your actions prove otherwise. Our organization, South Shore Clean Cities, assists our members and partners in applying for grant funding for sustainable transportation and energy projects that reduce harmful air pollutants. Most applications have boxes to check indicating whether the work will take place in high minority, low-income communities that do not meet federal air quality standards. Expansion to bring big impact for South Shore Clean Cities
The U.S. Department of Energy in February selected South Shore Clean Cities to lead a statewide pilot program to promote sustainable vehicles, fuels and technology. The organization, which is headquartered in the Lake County town of St. John, aims to improve air quality, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote alternative fuel vehicles and previously served just 18 counties in northern Indiana. Executive Director Carl Lisek says replicating the organization's model throughout the entire state will benefit all Hoosiers. In a recent interview on Inside INdiana Business with Gerry Dick, Lisek said the expansion will allow South Shore Clean Cities to broaden the number of entities it works with. Featured Fuel: Hydrogen
Hydrogen (H2) is a potentially emission-free alternative fuel that can be produced using domestic resources. Although not widely used as a transportation fuel, government and industry researchers are working on the advancement of clean economical and safe hydrogen production and fuel-cell electric vehicles. Hydrogen is locked up in enormous quantities in water (H2O), hydrocarbons (such as methane, CH4) and other organic matter. Efficiently producing hydrogen from these compounds is one of the challenges of using hydrogen as a fuel. Learn more on our Website
