 Dear Friends!

"What does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men. That is what love looks like."
 - St. Augustine

The rains are still falling in Texas. Unprecedented floods. Rainfall projected at 50 inches. The damage is on going and lives are being greatly impacted. Insurance companies call this kind of damage "act of God", but that is not where I see God acting. I see God acting through the women and men who are first responders, doctors, nurses, rescue, and both fire and police departments. I see the hand of God working through the people using their boats to rescue, opening up their homes to shelter, and their wallets to support. I see the hand of God through you, your prayers, your donations, your time, and your love.
South Shore, let us show one another what this kind of love looks like.

There will be time in the future to send some people to help on the ground, but here are some ways you can help now.

  1. PRAY for those impacted. Pray also for UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) and our United Methodist Churches who are in the impacted communities and all of the agencies and partners responding to those in need.
  2. Give generously to UMCOR Disaster Response Advance #901670. One hundred percent of your donation will go to help those affected by Harvey.
    • Over this past year, the Florida Conference has received $1.4 million dollars from UMCOR to assist with recovery from Hurricanes Hermine (Labor Day last year) and Matthew (one month later). We received these grants because churches like yours gave generously to UMCOR. Can we do any less?
    • And work teams are still needed for Hurricane Recovery here in Florida. CLICK HERE to learn more.
  3. Assemble flood buckets and hygiene kits and take them to one of the designated collection sites.
    • On September 21st these items will be shipped to UMCOR Sager Brown Depot in Baldwin, LA. Working with their network of partners, UMCOR will then get these items to the areas where they are needed most.
    • Last year we sent 3,115 flood buckest to help with the flooding in Louisiana. This year, the need is even greater! Please help! #imwithtexas
Collection sites (see below) will be ready to receive your flood buckets and hygiene kits beginning the week of September 3rd. All buckets and kits must be delivered to these sites by Sunday, September 17.
Collection sites will be transporting your donations to the hub locations September 18-20, where they will be palletized, shrink wrapped and ready for transport on September 21st.
Please place hygiene kits in a shipping box and seal it.
Please follow the directions for contents for both kits as closely as possible. This is very important!

This Sunday we will have buckets available to take home and fill as well as other means of donation and assistance.

" It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see"  -Henri David Thoreau

Disney in the 70's and 80's had a ride called 10,000 Leagues Under The Sea. It was a submarine ride that explored the vast underworld of the sea. Fish of varying color, sharks, and a giant squid were found as we glided through in the cold belly of that machine. I was young enough that my imagination added so much to this world; color, animation, reality. I would visit it again when I was older and the scales of innocence would fall from my eyes. I was so disappointed as my memory seemed to lie to me. I discovered that the ride was on a track, it didn't go underwater, the creatures were plastic, and that squid was still in the same place.

I was staring at the same thing, but how I looked at it had changed. I believe that the world is in this same state. God is active and working among every person. However, the world has been jaded through living and cannot see God's activity and therefore is missing out on the call Jesus has on each of our lives. They may say that age has shown them not to be so naive as they were when they were children. Life is hard and there is not magic anymore.

That is where I was when it came to Disney for so long. Then I had a child. We go to Disney as often as we can. The magic returned when I began to see the world through her eyes. Possibilities returned, there is a place where a flick of the wand can make dreams come true, there is a place where toys come alive, and a place where anything is possible.

When I became a Christian I was given new eyes. Life changed. Throughout my life as I have grown closer to God my vision changes and new possibilities are opened. I am never left hopeless, there is always a way through the dark, people can change and beautiful life can happen.

Romans 10 tells us that we are a part of this new sight. We are living in a world where people need to see and desire to see life, if only someone will take them and help them see that the magic is still there. Christians, how we live our life matters. If we can live with our eyes open and step into the places God calls us, then people's eyes will see God's true kingdom. Whether they choose to enter that world will be up to them, but at least they'll have the choice.

Isaiah said it first and Paul restates it in Romans, "how beautiful the feet of those who bring good news". We are called to have beautiful feet. This is a world that needs good news, are you ready to share what God is doing in your life?

Of course, there is the idea of "what is God doing in my life?" "How can I share what I see when I don't see anything?" Well, that is what we are going to talk about this week. Join me Sunday as we look into ways we can listen and see God.

B.E.L.L.S ministryopp
The B.E.L.L.S Challenge
The Goal of our faith is not to simply learn about what Jesus did. We are not called to be
admirers, but followers. How are you following Jesus?
The purpose of the church is to "alert others to universal reign of God through Jesus Christ"(*) We do this through through our word s and actions. If we believe that the ultimate reign of God in heaven will be one of justice, generosity, community, peace, reconciliation,  forgiveness and so on, then we ought to be living lives that reflect that Kingdom. Below you will find 5 practices that will help you live a life that follows Jesus. Look them over and give it a shot.

B:    Bless: I will bless three people this week, at least one of whom is not a                                  member of my faith community.
E:    Eat:     I will eat with three people this week, at least one of whom is not a                                 member of my faith community.
L:    Liste:  I will spend at least one period of the week listening for the Holy                                     Spirits voice.
L:    Learn: I will spend at least one period of the week learning about Jesus.                                  (read the Gospels, read books about Jesus, etc.)
S:    Sent:  We are a 'sent' people by God, I will journal the ways in which I                                      alerted others to God's reign through actions and words as well as                                opportunities missed, so as to grow in the image of Jesus.

* This quote and these ideas are fully explored in Michael Frost's book "Surprise the World"

How's your faith nourishment?

When reading scripture it is good to take your time and absorb it. It is challenging and sometimes confusing. Allow yourself room to be ok with not mastering it in one sitting. Write down your questions, challenge yourself, and allow God to work through the pages.

Read Scripture  (this is a scripture reading plan I have followed for almost two years now)
