A Note From the Principal

It was so great to see so many of you at parent night on September 9th. Our staff really enjoyed the chance to meet you and were glad to have the chance to provide an overview of our courses and programming. We are so excited to work with your kids this year!

It is hard to believe we have completed three weeks of school already. By now, students should be well-acquainted with the routines of South View and their schedule. One key part of the routine for students every day is advisory. Students start every day with their advisor, who helps connect them with resources, guides them through their experience at school, performs academic checks, helps them be sure to sign up for daily flex offerings, and more. We are very proud of the work our advisory teachers do to support our students. For a few more details about advisory, watch the first two minutes of this Overview of advisory and SV procedures and policies. As always, you are invited to review the details of this newsletter for helpful information and resources. We value your involvement; it is great to partner with such an engaged and supportive community!

Important Morning Reminder
Just a reminder that students are not permitted in the building before 9am unless they are registered for a Community Center class. There is no supervision before that time and students should remain in the car or at home until the building opens at 9am.

It’s Spirit Week Time (Sept 20-24)!
South View’s Spirit Team is sponsoring Homecoming Spirit Week Dress-Up Days the week of September 20. Encourage your students to join in the fun!
- Monday (9/20): Pajama Day (Relax & stay in your PJ’s all day!)
- Tuesday (9/21): Tie Dye (Show off as much tie dye as you can!)
- Wednesday (9/22): College/Sports Day (Show off your favorite college wear or sports team’s apparel!)
- Thursday (9/23): Tropical/Beach Day (Shorts, T-Shirts & Sunglasses, celebrate warm weather fun!)
- Friday (9/24): Edina Day (Show your Hornet Spirit!)

Join the SV Math Teachers for Math Lab!
When: Mondays from 8:45 - 9:15 (Starting September 20th)
Where: Math Flex Space (2nd floor)
What: Join our SV Math Teachers on Mondays for Math Lab. Come and go as you need. A teacher will be available to help with practice, studying for tests, and clarification of understanding.

Upcoming Testing
Grades 6-8 will be taking the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) online at school on October 11th and 12th. Please be sure your learner fully charges their device in order to be ready to go at school. MAP makeups will take place on October 14th and 15th.
You can help your learner have a positive experience with these assessments by:
- Seeing that your child is well rested during the testing period.
- Making sure your child has a good breakfast every day, especially during the testing period.

Not scheduling appointments or vacations that would take your child out of school during the testing period.
- Helping your child to be confident. Let him/her know that you know that he/she will do his/her best and that no one is expected to get every answer correct.
- Being sure he/she has the appropriate equipment; i.e., fully charged device, several No.2 pencils that are not too sharp, a good separate eraser, comfortable clothing and a water bottle.
- Keeping your child out of school if he/she is truly ill during the testing period.

Be the Change – Tutor Math
South View is looking for math tutors for the 2021-2022 school year. In Minnesota, nearly half our students are not proficient in math. You can make a difference by giving your time and talent to help students build their skills and confidence!
Tutors work with pairs of students during school hours throughout the school year. No matter if you’re a recent grad, career changer, stay-at-home parent or retiree, you can make a great tutor. No experience? No problem. Tutors receive great training, so they are well equipped to help students grow.
Part-time and full-time positions are available. Tutors commit to serving 35, 25, or 18 hours a week throughout the school year. Opportunities begin in October 2021.

- Receive a paid stipend every two weeks
- Earn up to $3,172 for college tuition or student loans. Tutors 55 and older may gift the award to their child, grandchild, stepchild or foster child.

Community Center Class Opportunities at SV!
Dungeons and Dragons - Spend time with your friends while you enter an alternative reality together playing Dungeons and Dragons. You will all encounter mythical creatures and exercise magical power. Adventure awaits... join today!
Strategy Games - Take tabletop gaming to the next level. Choose from classic games such as Stratego, Blokus, and Risk but also pursue recent popular games like Catan, Ticket to Ride, Ingenious, Pandemic, 7 Wonders, Splendor, and Code Names. Role Playing & Collectable Card Games are run by students.
Strength and Speed - This strength and speed program is designed for youth with minimal or no experience with performance training, but all fitness levels are welcome and will benefit! The goal of this program is to further enhance understanding regarding the basics of strength and speed training.
Wrestling Team - Edina Community Ed offers Wrestling for boys and girls in 6th- 8th grade. Our Season runs October 25 - December 17, 2021. Practices will be held Monday-Friday in the Valley View Middle School Cafeteria from 4:15-5:45pm. South View students can take activity bus to Valley View right after school.
Morning Math Team - Math Team is a fun and social way to show off students' mathematical abilities! Math Club will focus on Algebra and is best suited for students in accelerated math courses. There will be competitions taking place between September and January. These competitions are run through Minnesota Junior High Math League.
Mikkonen Music (At Normandale) - Thirty-minute music lessons in piano are offered after school at all Edina elementary sites through Mikkonen Music. Lessons run continuously throughout the school year for students in grades 1-12 and meet once a week for 8-week sessions.
Kung Fu – Wushu - Youth Age 5-18+ and Adults: Learn the life-long benefits of Kung Fu - the Chinese martial art of self-defense and fitness - and build muscle, power, flexibility, and agility. Join a fun, progressive, full-participation class, which focuses on skill-building exercises that will strengthen the mind and body. Parents: Don't wait outside. Register for class and participate with your child in class.

Audience: Parents and Professionals
Join Dr. Mary Sheedy Kurcinka, internationally recognized author of Sleepless in America and Raising Your Spirited Child to discover how to:
- Know if your child or you are suffering from sleep deprivation. (Children often do not tell us they are tired – instead they show us through challenging behaviors.)
- Identify the daily “little things” that innocently disrupt sound sleep.
- Establish a practical routine that protects sleep – even in a world that is constantly “on.”
- Build a community that recognizes the importance of sleep for the health and well-being of all.

Middle School Wrestling registration is now open!!
This is a great opportunity for all students in grades 6-8. We encourage anyone interested to sign up and give it a try. Our program is designed to help new and experienced wrestlers and the season runs from Oct. 25-Dec. 17 with practices being held after school!

The PTO works hard to support our students and staff and connect parents with information.
If you haven’t registered for the Online Student Directory and Paid your PTO fees, please do that now – here are instructions:

- Do Step 3: Click “PTO Dues & Membership” link to pay your dues and fees - click add to cart for each item desired, then click the pay now button. You can use credit card or Paypal
Please join us to get informed and involved. Our first PTO meeting is Wednesday, 9/22 @ 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Check-in at the main office and you will be directed to the conference room. Stay tuned for additional PTO meeting dates and times or check the website.

Parking Lot Safety/Pick Up & Drop Off
Traffic flow is much heavier than anticipated. This is causing congestion that we are working to manage. Please note: the 6th and 7th grade parent pick-up/drop-off zone is the south side of the building at the new main entrance. This route is a one way route, and we ask that you pull all the way forward so traffic can flow much easier. When leaving the lot during heavy traffic you may turn right only!
Parents of 8th graders are encouraged to use the west side of the building (doors 10-11) for pick up/drop-off. This route is a one way route, enter by the ECC and make the full loop in order to pick up and drop off by the pool doors.
For safety reasons, you should NOT pick up or drop your student off on the north side of the building. We will continue to discourage this.
Please remember to slow down and drive safely in our parking lots and cooperate with our traffic attendants as they work to keep us all safe.

Online Attendance
Online process to excuse your child from school for South View! Parents please use our online system to excuse students from school. You may also still call the school’s attendance line if you prefer. Please use the resources below to learn how to use the online attendance system.

Early Student Pick-Up and late arrival
Please schedule appointments outside of school hours. If your child needs to leave school, all pick ups and late arrivals can be arranged thru the online attendance system in the parent portal.
All calls to the attendance line need to be made by 9:00am the day of the absence or appointment by calling 952-848-3702.
If a parent or guardian submits online attendance for a student to leave early, it is the student's responsibility to pick up the admittance pass in the front office prior to the start of the school day. The student will show the teacher and the office staff the pass when it is time to leave.
All drop off and pick ups will be at door 1.
