Stay in Tune with What’s Working in Prevention

Every month, we share what’s
new at the Southeast Harris County Community Coalition — from new events to recent wins that helped support our community members. Let’s dive in!

January Updates

Youth Advocacy Summit

Our 6th Annual Youth Advocacy Summit (YAS) brought energy and purpose to the East Harris Activity Center on January 17, as students in grades 6-12 came together to grow as leaders and change makers. Throughout the day, youth participated in hands-on activities that challenged them to think critically, communicate confidently, and explore how they can create positive change in their communities.

The summit created space for connection and fun while giving students the chance to earn volunteer hours and gain meaningful personal insight. Prevention specialist Brent Blackburn and Meagan Miller of Texans for Safe and Drug-Free Youth led engaging presentations that encouraged leadership, advocacy, and community involvement. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this event a success!

January Mental Health Awareness Trainings

Throughout January, counselors from Pasadena ISD and nursing staff from La Porte ISD participated in Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training. This impactful training equips participants with the skills to recognize signs of mental health and substance use challenges in young people, start supportive conversations, and take action when youth need help the most.

CPR Trainings for BACODA Staff

All BACODA staff are CPR trained and certified, ensuring preparedness in emergency situations. Throughout January, staff participated in re-certification trainings to keep their skills sharp.

La Porte High School Connect Fair

On January 22, BACODA partnered with two Youth Advisory Council (YAC) members to table at the La Porte High School Connect Fair. This event welcomed 8th grade students who will be attending LPHS next year and served as an introduction to school organizations, clubs, and extracurricular opportunities. Together, BACODA staff and YAC youth shared substance use prevention education and mental health resources, helping students start their high school journey informed and supported.

Southeast Harris Community Coalition January Meeting

Last month, we hosted our monthly SEHCC meeting featuring guest speaker Felicia A. Curry, M.Ed., Community Health Organizer with the Texas A&M School of Public Health (TOPS Area 2). She delivered an informative presentation on opioids, “Fentanyl 101."

Education Highlights

National Heart Month

February is National Heart Month, a perfect time to show your heart some love. Caring for your heart keeps you healthy, energized, and ready to enjoy the people and activities you care about most.

Heart disease can affect anyone, regardless of age or lifestyle, and is one of the leading causes of health complications in our communities. Taking care of your heart supports overall well-being, boosts energy, and helps manage stress.

Thanks for being part of our coalition community.
