Girls Go STEM! Inspires Iowa's Next Generation of STEMinists

On December 1st, the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine hosted girls in grades 6-8 for a morning of interactive sessions that introduced students to fields in health science. Attendees chose from 17 different topics to investigate to fill four 30-minute sessions, with topics ranging from chemistry and microbes to medical imaging and biomedical engineering.

Girls Go STEM! organizers hope attendees " discover the exciting world of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) as [the girls] engage in fun, hands-on medical simulations and science experiments, and learn how [they] can make a difference in health care careers." An adult must accompany each student and has an agenda of their own, with presentations for parents on encouraging the next generation of young women to reach their potential.

The Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council is soon to release the menu for next year's STEM Scale-Up programs. Applications open for these programs on Monday, January 21, 2019 and close March 4, 2019. These programs range from PreK-12 grade formal and informal learning programs illustrating early physics and engineering concepts to computer science to biology and natural science. Selected teacher applicants will be notified of their award beginning in early April.

Iowa's Scale-Up programs are reinventing the educational experience and introducing students to fields in STEM that have never been taught this way. To learn more about the Scale-Up programs, visit  https://iowastem.gov/Scale-Up.

Externship Program Application Open For
Teachers and Businesses

One of the unique ways the Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council has advanced Iowans' connection to local businesses is through the Iowa STEM Teacher Externship Program.  Teacher Externships are full-time, six-week temporary summer positions in local businesses and agencies for secondary teachers of science, technology, engineering and/or math.  Teachers earn a stipend of up to $4,800 (including two days of professional development), as well as one graduate credit through the University of Northern Iowa's Continuing Education program.  If your business is interested in hosting teacher extern(s) this summer, please fill out the interest form linked below.

Check out the video below to see how teachers and businesses have been positively impacted by externships. For more information, visit  https://iowastem.gov/externships.
