National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference serves 1,300 professionals


Georgia Southern University’s College of Education had near record-breaking attendance at the 34th annual National Youth Advocacy and Resilience (NYAR) Conference. A student from Georgia Southern’s College of Education was selected to attend Posters at the Capitol on February 27. Caroline Ray, a senior majoring in Special Education, traveled to Atlanta to present her research poster titled, “The Use of Behavior Specific Praise in a Secondary Math Classroom.”

Volunteers from the College of Education assisted with the Bulloch County Special Olympics Spring Games on April 11. They were in place at Statesboro High School’s Womak Field by 9 a.m. for the welcome parade as about 200 children with special needs arrived for the event.

This semester, Ansley Thompson-Rogers, Assistant Professor of Reading, assigned a unique group project to students in READ 4233 - Literacy Assessment and Instruction. The two classes each hosted an after-hours Literacy Night event for families at a partner elementary school.

COE Advisory Board Member Spotlight


Meet COE Advisory Board Member Rebeccah Phillips. Rebeccah is a seventh-grade teacher who graduated from Georgia Southern with her BSED in Middle Grades Education in 2011 and her M.Ed. in Accomplished Teaching/Curriculum and Instruction in 2013. She teaches at Bethune Middle School in Folkston, Georgia, where she also serves as Seventh Grade Team Leader/Grade Chair and the Title I Family Engagement Coordinator. She is an active member of her church and supports her students and community by regularly attending their concerts, athletic events, musicals, and plays. She is a proud mother of two and lives with her husband in Folkston, Georgia.


COE's 15 Advisory Board Members learn about the initiatives, accomplishments, and challenges of the college and advise Dean Sharon Subreenduth. They also advocate for and promote the college to external constituents.
