Foresters & Extension Agents from Multiple States Aid Those in Hurricane's Path

Tropical Storm/Hurricane Harvey cut across Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi this week. Our thoughts are with those afflicted by the devastation, but we are proud of the response we've seen from our Extension and forestry colleagues. We've gathered some links to illustrate the strength of that response and some Extension resources to help forest landowners care for their land and trees in the storm's aftermath.

SREF Staff Travel to Regional and National Meetings to Strengthen Partnerships

In August, 2017, SREF staff traveled to two important meetings: the Annual Regional Program Leadership Network (PLN) meeting in Fort Worth, Texas and a National Forest Tax Experts summit in Washington, DC. Both meetings provided an excellent opportunity for SREF to engage with its partners and opened up possibilities for new collaborations. Significantly, the Forest Tax Experts team agreed that developing a joint research/Extension logic model would be an effective use of their time, and the draft results are being circulated for edit and review. Anyone interested in this effort is encouraged to reach out to Dr. Bill Hubbard for more information and to visit timbertax.org for updates in the future. We've written more about these important meetings on our website and have shared some of documents that we presented at the PLN meeting to give you a snapshot of what we've been doing recently.

SREF Conducts Extension Forestry Needs Assessment to Increase its Effectiveness

In early 2017, SREF conducted a needs assessment of forestry Extension personnel to determine how well the office was meeting its goals and to identify important forest resource issues and opportunities. A summary of the results of that assessment is now available in fact sheet form at our website. The data has provided us with invaluable suggestions on how best to serve the 13 Southern Land-grant Universities in the future!

Urban & Community Forestry Federal Grants Make a Difference!

Southern Regional Extension Forestry (SREF) completed an impact assessment of the USDA Forest Service National Urban and Community Forestry Grant Program. SREF found that programs funded through the grants reached millions of people and developed critical research. Moreover, in excess of $13 million in additional funds were awarded to grant recipients. In all, for every federal dollar invested in these grants, there was a $4.92 return on investment!
