NC Extension Assists with Spreading the Word about Timber Restoration Funds

The NCSU Cooperative Extension Service has been assisting the North Carolina Forest Service with information regarding  timber restoration funds available to North Carolina landowners who live in counties designated as in a state of emergency by the governor. The funds are to be used for tree planting and site preparation to help mitigate any negative forest impacts from Hurricane Matthew and the recent wildfires in the region. All projects must be completed by April 30, 2017.

  Southern Fire Exchange Offers Series of February Webinars

The Southern Fire Exchange will be offering a series of four webinars this February: two on prescribed burning, one on planning for wildfire in the wildland-urban interface (WUI), and another on next generation fire modeling for advanced wildfire training. The first, " How Important is it to Mimic Natural Fire Regimes in the SE Coastal Plain?" airs February 9 at 1 PM. Don't forget to sign up! 

Auburn Welcomes New  Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist in Forest Systems Management 

On January 4, 2017, the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences at Auburn University welcomed Dr. Adam Maggard as an Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist in Forest Systems Management. We'd like to wish a warm welcome to Dr. Maggard, and we look forward to future collaborations!  

New Snake ID Website Offered by University of Kentucky Extension Forestry & Wildlife

The University of Kentucky Forestry & Wildlife Extension team recently developed a highly useful new website that aids the user in identifying snakes that they may encounter in Kentucky's forests, prairies, wetlands, rivers and even their own backyards. Great images and interactivity! 

        to host annual National Timber Tax Webinar

Forest landowners needn't fret about their taxes: Dr. Linda Wang, National Timber Tax Specialist at the USDA Forest Service, will be offering a webinar on February 17 with the latest tax information, filing season updates, and practical tax tips to help landowners navigate the often complicated state and federal tax codes. 
Extension Specialists in the South Earn  National Partnership Award 

Several Extension Forestry and Natural Resources specialists, staff and students recently learned that they had received national recognition for their work on The Pine Integrated Network: Education, Mitigation, and Adaptation project, better known as PINEMAP,  a five-year research project to determine how changes to climate could affect pine forests in the southeastern US.  The project, coming to a close at the end of February, was recently selected for a Partnership Award by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture in recognition of the successful integration of its three main goals: research, outreach, and education. We are proud to have been a part of this great collaboration! 

 Continuing Education Opportunity: Prescribed Fire Workshop in Louisiana

The SW LA Forestry Association, the LSU AgCenter, Louisiana State Parks, and the LA Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) will be having a workshop May 16-18 in Florien, Louisiana to enable forest landowners to burn their lands safely and legally. Topics will include: fuels, burning techniques, proper tools, optimal weather conditions, smoke management, liability management, planning, fire behavior and more. Don't forget to sign up in advance!

Virginia Cooperative Extension to Host Weekend Retreats for Beginning Landowners

The Virginia Department of Forestry and Virginia Cooperative Extension will be hosting a series of retreats this year  geared towards landowners who are new to forest management. They will  provide information on forest management,  offer chances for interaction with natural resource professionals from various agencies in Virginia as well as with other landowners, and deliver  information on estate planning, management planning and certification. The first retreat is March 17-19 at Holiday Lake 4-H Educational Center, Appomattox, VA.

Don't miss the Spring 2017 installment of the Forest Health and Invasive Species Outreach & Education Program (FHIS)'s forest health webinars. The next webinar, Forest Management for Wildlife, premieres February 15 at 1 PM EST. The first in the series, which discussed using forest and firewood polling data to promote forest health, aired in January and can be viewed on demand in the archive here. Continuing Ed credits are available.
