Greetings!
Spring is finally here, and we are looking forward to warmer weather and more sunshine at Southern Reins Center for Equine Therapy. We kicked off our Spring 2022 session this week with nearly fifty participants in our Adaptive Riding Program, as well as two groups of veterans coming out weekly as part of our PATH Intl. Equine Services for Heroes Program. Our 7th Annual Jockeys & Juleps Derby Party is coming up soon on May 7 and is almost SOLD OUT. We are also celebrating being named 2021 Nonprofit of the Year by the Collierville Chamber of Commerce.
Here are just a few highlights of all of the great things happening this month at Southern Reins Center for Equine Therapy as we are working to change lives . . . one ride at a time.

Our therapy horses are trusted friends, caring companions, and dedicated partners. They are the foundation of our program, and they put their heart into every step they take to serve their participants. Some of our horses are older and need additional nutritional care and supplements, specialty shoeing, or daily medication so they are comfortable and healthy. If a member of our team is injured or sick, they may need veterinary services, diagnostic care, and treatment.
To ensure our equine partners receive the care they need, we created the Guardian Angel Club. Donations received from our Guardian Angels are exclusively allocated to cover excess medical costs, medications, and nutritional support for our herd.
With a recurring gift of $5 a month or more, you will make a tremendous difference in giving our horses the care they need - when they need it - so they can continue their service to children and adults with disabilities and hardship throughout our community.

Adaptive riding provides benefits in the areas of health, education, sport and recreation, and leisure. Throughout the world, there are thousands of individuals with disabilities who experience the rewarding benefits of riding a horse.
Riders with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance, and muscle strength, because horseback riding rhythmically moves the rider's body in a manner similar to a human gait. In addition to these therapeutic benefits, horseback riding also provides outdoor recreational and social opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Our adaptive riding program is offered to participants age 5 and up.
Professional staff and volunteers work closely with participants to ensure safe horseback riding sessions. A new rider is typically assisted by two sidewalkers who walk alongside the horse, as well as a horse leader. All classes are taught by PATH Intl. certified riding instructors who have a strong equine background, as well as an understanding of various disabilities.

Southern Reins' volunteers make a difference in the lives of our participants and are at the heart of all that we do. Our volunteers assist in lessons as Sidewalkers and Horse Leaders, in the barn with our horses, and throughout the year for special events. Whether you have a passion for horses, a love of people, or just the desire to serve somewhere meaningful, you have a place here!

Southern Reins is honored to partner with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center as a fieldwork site, and we welcome Occupational Therapy Students Peyton and Tatum to the farm for their first two-week fieldwork rotation. Peyton and Tatum are pictured here with therapy horse Jazz and Barn Staff Alicia during volunteer training this week. (If you look closely, you can see Jazz sporting a cool new hairdo.)
