CD REVIEW: Vintage #18
VINTAGE #18
Grit
self-produced
From the East Coast, Vintage #18 is vocalist Robbin Kapsalis, guitarist Bill Holter, bassist/keyboardist Mark Chandler, and drummer Alex Kuldell. For this, their debut album, they've laid down nine original songs and two covers. They're very good. Receiving high praise for their appearance at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis last year, Vintage #18 went into the recording studio and came up with a winner. Kapsalis uses his voice alongside Holter's guitar to deliver lyrics that one wants to remember. He sings "I've got a love hangover ... Don't know my head from my toes." And the band portrays this original song as if it were an old blues tune from way back.
With Bob Dylan's "Million Miles" they give you the kind of slow drama that asks rhetorical questions and pauses after each phrase for digestion. The lyrics go down slow. With ZZ Top's "Just Got Back from Baby's" they lay down a low moan that tells the story in earnest. Vintage #18 makes use of rhythm to keep this one and all the other selections moving with a positive drive. Later, with their "Circles Down Home" the Washington DC-based band summarizes its performance with a casual blues lament that drives with the kind of foot-stompin' energy that moves a listener to automatic empathy.
