Southland Elementary - Parent Link
4/28/22
Wednesday, May 25th
More information will be coming soon!!!
Drop-Off:
Morning drop-off (7:45-8:15) can be done at the Main Entrance/Office or the Elementary wing on the East side of the building only. We are looking at the safety of the students and all the traffic that there is at that time.
If you are dropping off your student after 8:15 or before 3:00, please do so at the Main Entrance, NOT the Elementary Doors. The office needs to make sure that the kids are getting checked in/out accordingly.
Pick-Up:
After school pick-up (after 3:00) can be done at the Office or classroom. If you are picking up on the East side by the Elementary wing, please come into the building and pick your child up in their classrooms. If you are picking up your student before 3:00, please do so at the Main Entrance, NOT the Elementary Doors. The office needs to make sure that the kids are getting checked in/out accordingly.
Any Absence:
If your child has to be gone from school instruction, please contact the office by phone at 507-582-3568, or by email [email protected]

A detailed message as to why they are gone (ill and symptoms, appointment, out of town....) is much appreciated. Nurse Emily will follow up if need be. Thank you so much for your cooperation.

**Video Game Concern**
Poppy Playtime
There have been warnings for parents in the media about this character and others of Poppy Playtime, and the negative impact it may have on small children.

It looks all sweet/innocent until it smiles. There is a frightening song that goes with this video game, talking about hugging parents until they die. Futhermore, this blue bear-like creature chases and threatens other characters in nightmarish scenarios, leaving many children upset and scared.
**Video Game Concern**
WIKIPEDIA: Poppy Playtime is a first-person survival horror where the player plays as a former employee of Playtime Co. who returns to the abandoned toy factory of said company after receiving a letter from the staff who were thought to have disappeared 10 years ago.[1] The protagonist discovers that Huggy Wuggy, a large humanoid figure that acts as the mascot of the company, is alive and is malicious towards them, along with other enemies throughout the factory.[2] The game utilises multiple puzzles throughout, which the player must solve in order to progress further, with some requiring a gadget named the GrabPack, a backpack that can be equipped with two extendable hands which can be used to pull and reach objects from a far distance, conduct electricity and access certain doors.[3][4][5] The player can also find various VHS tapes lying around the factory, which gives a more in-depth explanation of the story.[6]

On March 22, 2022,[26] Dorset Police released a statement to parents regarding the character Huggy Wuggy, claiming that due to the character's name, various videos were not being blocked by "firewalls"[22][26] and filtered by parental filters on various platforms, including TikTok and YouTube Kids.[27] They also claimed that various schools around the United Kingdom reported children recreating a game where one child hugs another and then whispers sinister things into the recipient's ear.[28] Some parents reported their children attempting to jump out of the window, claimed to be mimicing the character.[22] The character, according to the Luxemburg-Casco School District in Wisconsin, has also reportedly impacted children's rapid eye movement sleep.[29] A warning was also put out by Lafayette County Sheriff's Department in Wisconsin on April 7.[30] Fact-checking website Snopes confirmed that there had been reports from parents within the United Kingdom; however, Snopes also stated that the police had incorrectly claimed that the character sang songs, despite said songs not being official and not appearing in-game. Snopes had also said that inappropriate videos involving the character were not available for younger users on TikTok and YouTube Kids, with spokespersons for each platform confirming so.[26]

Lunch
Visitors are welcome to join for lunch. With the limited space that we have in the lunchroom, we have an area by the Ag Room set up or you can go to the commons area to enjoy your lunch and visit.
Please let the office know that morning so we can give our cooks an accurate count.
