Estimates from the Combined 2022-2023 National Survey of Children's Health are now available on CAHMI's Data Resource Center's Interactive Data Query

The Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative (CAHMI) is excited to announce, with the support of the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), the release of 2022-2023 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) Child and Family Health Measures on the Data Resource Center (DRC)!

The DRC’s interactive data query provides point and click access to national, state and regional data for nearly 400 Child and Family Health Measures! Representing data collected from 109,265 children ages 0-17 years, the 2022-2023 combined year NSCH data offers larger sample sizes and robust estimates which facilitate important subgroup analyses across state and child populations.

The 2022-2023 combined year dataset includes a brand-new measure, the Whole Child Risk Index, and an additional measure of children who met an expanded criteria for special healthcare needs. The interactive data query now also supports additional subgroups including child flourishing and the new expanded criteria for children with special health care needs. These measures and subgroups offer additional insight and context related to health equity in MCH populations. This is also the first combined year dataset to display the new measure for school readiness. View your state’s data for this new national outcome measure!

With this newsletter we celebrate the life and impact of Dr. Peter C. van Dyck—the MCHB Director leading the launch of the NSCH and DRC!

We at CAHMI join MCHB in honoring Dr. Peter C. van Dyck, who passed away on November 30, 2024. Dr. van Dyck’s visionary leadership transformed maternal and child health programs nationwide.

As the first permanent Director of MCHB’s Office of State and Community Health (1992-1998) and later as Associate Administrator (1998-2011), he established the Title V MCH Block Grant and pioneered its performance measurement system, one of the first in the government. His leadership also created lasting impacts through programs like Children with Special Health Care Needs, Healthy Start, and the National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs (NS-CSHCN).

CAHMI had the privilege of working closely with Dr. van Dyck and his team to kickstart, design and launch of both the NS-CSHCN and the National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH) NSCH. As a part of this CAHMI partnered with MCHB to create the Data Resource Center (DRC) and advanced an array of measures such as the CSHCN Screener, Medical Home, and Flourishing measures.

Dr. van Dyck’s legacy of innovation and dedication inspires our work every day. He will be deeply missed and celebrated for years to come.
