Update from Principal Miracle
Good afternoon, Families.

#SedgefieldStrong is our motto this year. You should be beyond proud of your student's resiliency and motivation during this back to school window.

Please see below for some general updates:
  • Empowering Extraordinary Campaign is in full swing. Please visit the PTO website for how to contribute and support the success of our students.
  • Canvas updates and modifications will continue to be made. If you have any suggestions, strategies, or questions please do not hesitate to reach out. We are continuing to improve our expectations to ensure students are supported.
  • September is Library Card Sign-Up Month. Need a Library Card? Get an Instant virtual card here While our branches are open with limited capacity, the Library is always here to serve the community. Did you know that you can continue to participate in Library programming while staying home? Join Charlotte Mecklenburg Library every week for a wide range of virtual programming for children, teens, and adults. Here are a couple of programs we offer digitally and on our Digital Branch where anyone can participate.
We appreciate each of you.

Please let us know if we can help in any way.

SMS Remote Learning Schedule
SMS will follow the CMS-recommended daily schedule for remote learning. The schedule will be as follows:

  • Synchronous (live) Learning---Daily from 8:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. Students will follow their PowerSchool Schedule (including A/B rotations).

  • Asynchronous Learning---Daily from 12:20 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. is recommended. (Time is not monitored; however, assignments are monitored)

Empowering Extraordinary at SMS
In 2019, community members and corporate sponsors stepped forward in partnership with Spartan families to raise over $100,000 for our first-ever Empowering Extraordinary capital campaign. Campaign dollars raised were used to financially support initiatives to raise the bar for student achievement, academic resources, community engagement, and capital needs at SMS.

In 2020, a year of such uncertainty, change and growth, the important work at SMS has never felt more timely or critical.

We are asking you to "Empower Extraordinary" at SMS by supporting the dedicated staff and families of Spartan scholars. Our goal is to raise $75,000 to support and grow academic offerings, provide social and emotional growth opportunities, and increase enrichment programming and athletic activities at SMS.

We hope you will consider a meaningful gift to support current and future scholars at SMS by making a tax-deductible donation to Sedgefield Middle School PTO (501c3). The campaign deadline for contributions is September 30, 2020.

Join the SMS PTO
Parent involvement plays a vital role in the success of our school. The first step to growing a relationship with Sedgefield is a simple one: become a member of the PTO.

Please be advised that Sedgefield Middle School will be administering the MAP Growth Test on September 15th and 16th. This is a universal screener used to assess students foundational skills in both Math and Reading. Students will take this test during their SEL time at the beginning of the day on both of these days and will not have additional synchronous learning on these days.

In addition, students will complete a Device Readiness Activity on September 9th. This activity will allow the school to identify any students whose device may not be working properly for administration of the MAP test.

Please refer to the attached document for additional information. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
Sixth Grade Spartan Events
Welcome to our new sixth grade Spartan families! There are several upcoming events especially for our sixth grade Spartans. Keep an eye out for a ParentSquare update from Ms. Miracle for information about these upcoming events.
Remote Learning Resources from CMS
To support virtual learning this fall, CMS will continue to use Canvas as the CMS Learning Management System for students in grades Pre-K-12 to ensure a consistent experience for all CMS students and families.
