Sedgefield Middle Kicked Off 2020 with a Focus on Health and Wellness
Nearly 40 members of the Sedgefield Middle community kicked off 2020 with a free lasagna dinner, a general PTO meeting and our first-ever Spartan Health and Wellness event on Wednesday, January 15. After PTO updates from Lindsay Jones, president, and Courtney Reynolds, treasurer, Principal Turner gave a general update on the school and introduced the event's four guest speakers.

Detective Kenny Lynch of CMS law enforcement focused on internet safety and use of social media, with guidelines on limiting screen time for scholars and making age-appropriate decisions for smart devices. Detective Lynch said, "With smart devices, we are giving our kids access to the world and the world access to them."

From Dilworth Drug & Wellness Center, Josh Rimany, RPh and chief wellness officer, and Connie Mullis, NDTR and nutrition specialist, spoke on the importance of childhood nutrition. Limiting sugar, eating colorful fruits and veggies, giving scholars plenty of sleep, managing stress, and exercise are "the foundations of a healthy lifestyle," they said. "You are what you eat...and healthy habits have a generational influence."

Closing out the event was Eboné Lockett, a CMS educator and community advocate. Ms. Lockett stressed the need to connect with our community - those in proximity to us - across ages, genders, ethnicities, experiences and even food in order to build a supportive community.

Mr. Turner said the impetus for creating a health and wellness event was the understanding that "what happens outside of our school affects what happens inside our school. We asked ourselves how we could best promote health and wellness for our families with the help of community experts."

Thank you to all attendees and organizers, our special guest speakers and our partners at Myers Park United Methodist Church for providing dinner. We look forward to this being the first of many events to promote a broader health and wellness initiative at Sedgefield Middle!

If you have ideas or expertise on future health and wellness initiatives and would like to join our planning committee, please contact Dr. Tornfelt, assistant principal, or Lindsay Jones, PTO president .

Spartan Spotlight: Mr. Chris Brown
A resident of Chicago for 14 years, Mr. Brown moved to Charlotte in August 2019 to become our theatre arts teacher - teaching drama and directing the Spartan Ensemble Theatre - and to lead the development of this exciting, new department at Sedgefield. In Chicago, Mr. Brown taught theatre and public speaking at the City Colleges of Chicago and worked for nine years in higher education. This is his first year teaching in a K-12 school.

“My favorite aspect of working with middle school scholars is the chance to provide a creative outlet and a safe harbor for kids going through some of the hardest years of growing up,” he said. “I introduce the dramatic arts to scholars by giving them an opportunity to practice acting, playwriting, set designing, and costume designing. I work to build each scholar’s capacity to communicate with expressive confidence and creative discipline. I guide them in developing an understanding of how to think critically and work collaboratively.”

Proctors Needed for EOG/EOC Testing
We're halfway through the year - which means it's never too early to start thinking about end-of-grade (EOG) and end-of-course (EOC) testing. We need volunteers to proctor the following exams:

  • May 27 - Reading EOG
  • May 28 - Math EOG/Math 1 EOC
  • June 2 - 8th Grade Science EOG

Help Boost Literacy by Becoming a Reading Buddy!
Are you interested in reading with one of our amazing scholars once or twice a week? Our Reading Buddies Program is an amazing program matching a volunteer with one of our scholars to read books on a weekly basis together. Helping to model good reading, the Reading Buddies program provides success in literacy, students often become more positive about their ability to read and may also improve their reading skills. The school will have a selection of books for the scholar and Reading Buddy to select from based on the scholar’s reading level.

The times and days will be based on your availability and the scholar’s schedule.

If you are interested in this amazing program, please e-mail Mrs. Courtney Pierce, our dean of instruction, at

All volunteers must be a registered CMS Volunteer.  Click here to register.

Examples of middle-school appropriate games include: playing cards, Uno, Jenga, Monopoly, Sorry, Trouble, chess and checkers.

Please send your donations to the front office to the attention of the PTO; games will be collected in the parent room. If donating gently used games, please ensure all pieces are included.
