Thank You for Empowering Extraordinary!
Sedgefield Middle's Empowering Extraordinary Campaign met and surpassed our school's fundraising goal of $100,000! Stay tuned for a final campaign total in the next few weeks and look in the Spartan Express for exciting updates on how these funds are being used to support our scholars, teachers and administration.
On behalf of the Empowering Extraordinary campaign committee, our staff and most importantly, our Spartan Scholars, thank you to everyone who donated.  We could not have met our goal without your support. Spartan Spotlight: Ms. Madeley Buitrago, Spanish Teacher
National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15) recognizes and celebrates the contributions made by Hispanic and Latino/Latina Americans to the United States. During the month, we'll celebrate the contributions and heritage of our own Hispanic SMS staff and teachers in our Spartan Spotlight.

Originally from Medellín, Colombia, Ms. Buitrago has taught Spanish at Sedgefield Middle for almost seven years. Before joining Sedgefield, she taught at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology for six years.

Ms. Buitrago was a teacher in Colombia and came to Charlotte in 2006 as part of an exchange teacher program. She loved Charlotte so much she stayed!

In addition to providing our scholars with foreign language instruction, Ms. Buitrago teaches students about Hispanic people and their cultural influence as a way to celebrate her own heritage. During National Hispanic Heritage Month, she shares the reasons to celebrate, as well as traditions and customs.

Sign the Title 1 Compact by October 4
As part of the school-level parent and family engagement policy, each new school year SMS issues a Title 1 learning compact that outlines how parents, school staff and students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement. This Title 1 Compact outlines how the school and parents will build and develop a partnership to help our scholars meet and/or exceed the state’s academic standards. The Title 1 Compact is reviewed annually in the spring with our school’s SLT committee.

We need 100% of our families - parents and scholars alike - to review, sign and return the Title 1 Compact to SMS by Friday, October 4. Scholars may turn in completed compacts in their homerooms.

Calling All Volunteers!
SMS has many opportunities for volunteer engagement. If you haven't already, sign up for these rewarding opportunities. Many positions can be handled from home, while others provide an opportunity to connect directly with parents, teachers, students and staff.

Link Your Harris Teeter VIC Card
Through Harris Teeter's Together in Education program, SMS has the opportunity to earn funding when you link your Harris Teeter VIC card. Cards must be linked yearly to benefit our school. Linking your VIC card is easy, quick and doesn't cost you a thing.
