PTO Meeting and Curriculum Night
Thank you to all of the families, faculty and staff that joined us for the PTO meeting and curriculum night on October 10. During the evening, Mr. Turner provided an update on our Title I school funding; we reviewed the PTO Empowering Extraordinary fundraising campaign, budget and activities for the 2019-20 school year; and families joined teachers in their classrooms for an overview of all our scholars will learn this year.

Please join us for our next PTO-sponsored events: Tye Dye and Bingo Night tonight from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. and the homecoming game and tailgate on October 30. We look forward to seeing you there!
Spartan Spotlight: Ms. Andrena "Renee" Goodwin, Dean of Students
An educator for more than 22 years, Ms. Goodwin (who goes by her middle name Renee) joined Sedgefield Middle in December 2018 as the dean of students/eighth grade administrator. Prior to joining SMS, she taught social studies and served as a facilitator, predominantly at the high school level. As dean of students, Ms. Goodwin oversees transportation, manages the daily operations of eighth grade affairs, carries out incentive programs, provides teachers with instructional coaching and feedback, and assists with student behavior redirection.

“My work at SMS is an exciting privilege. I enjoy working with young people and ensuring they always feel welcomed, expected and cared for everyday,” she said. “After spending 20 years of my career in high schools, I wanted to renew my spirit in education by trying middle school. The best things about the middle school level are the hugs and watching the metamorphosis of the children as they become their unique selves.”

Empowering Extraordinary Dollars at Work: Professional Development
Thanks to our generous Empowering Extraordinary supporters, Sedgefield Middle School’s math teachers will be attending critical professional development in Greensboro, NC at the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics in November. The staff are excited about this opportunity, which will benefit our entire math department and positively impact our students. Your support makes this possible- thank you!

Club Volunteers Needed - Sign Up Today!
Clubs are a great way for scholars to work with different peers and learn new skills...and a phenomenal way for staff members to build relationships with scholars. SMS is excited to offer over 20 clubs to our scholars! The clubs range from academically-based clubs to sports-related. Scholars will be in the same club for one semester and may choose a new club in January.

We welcome any support from our parents and community members to assist with the clubs. If you are interested, please sign up here . Be sure to include your e-mail and phone number to receive updates. Please note: all volunteers must be cleared CMS volunteers; this must be done on a yearly basis. Click here to register as a CMS volunteer .
It's Okay to Judge (the Science Fair!)
From December 3-6, Sedgefield Middle scholars will flaunt their science know-how at our school science fair. To make this event a sure-fire success, volunteers are needed to help judge project oral presentations.

No science qualifications are needed (you'll be trained prior to judging) and all judges will receive a snack (Pavlovian conditioning, perhaps?) A variety of time slots are available to volunteer, so click here to sign up today. Science fair winners will be announced on December 12 at the Holiday Arts night.
