Rising Sixth Spartan Pep Rally, November 13, 9 a.m.

Rising sixth graders from Sedgefield Middle feeder elementary schools will arrive on campus on Wednesday morning to get a sneak peek at their future middle school and learn all about the opportunities available to them as a Spartan.

To put our full Spartan pride on display, please have your current scholar wear their Spartan t-shirt from the PTO for pep rally day!

Prospective Family Open House, January 8, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Our second Prospective Family Open House and Social is being held on Wednesday, January 8 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Know a prospective family interested in attending Sedgefield Middle? Encourage them to join us for this informative session with Sedgefield administration, teachers, parents and students.

Also, if you know someone considering attending Sedgefield Middle, please share this flyer with them about upcoming prospective family events. Questions? E-mail Lindsay Jones.
Tell a Friend - Prospective Family Tours at SMS
If you know a prospective family headed to middle school next year, share with them this sign up to schedule a tour of Sedgefield Middle. Tours are offered twice per month . Families are welcome to bring their student with them on the tour and we welcome the opportunity to meet their child. Families should indicate who will be attending when they complete the sign up.
Packed House at the Open House
Families of rising sixth graders (and some of the rising sixth graders themselves!) joined Sedgefield Middle School on Wednesday, November 7 for our first prospective parent open house of the year.

In the filled media center, Principal Turner gave an overview of Sedgefield’s curriculum, school size, electives, athletics and club offerings. Tara Sullivan, central learning community superintendent, and school board member Margaret Marshall joined to welcome interested families and give an update on CMS support of our school. Following the information session, families were guided by staff and teachers for a complete tour of Sedgefield’s facilities.

Thank you to all of the prospective families for joining us and to the faculty, staff, administration and volunteers for helping organize this fantastic event!
Grounds Clean Up on November 23
Help keep the Sedgefield campus in tip-top shape by volunteering on Saturday, November 23 from 8 a.m. - 11 a.m. during grounds clean-up day. Volunteers will meet by and focus on beautifying the baseball field. Please bring gloves.

Can't participate in the clean up, but would still like to help? We'd love donations of coffee, donuts or biscuits to help keep our volunteers nourished!

Questions? Text Andrew Thiel at 704-488-5736.
Spartan Spotlight: Ms. Courtney Pierce
If you see Ms. Pierce today, November 12, make sure to wish her a happy birthday! You can also help her celebrate this year as her fifth year at Sedgefield Middle and her thirteenth year in education. As our dean of students/7 th grade administrator, Ms. Pierce’s role ranges in everything from working directly with scholars to providing classroom support.

She began her career at Independence High School and worked at Ashley Park PreK-8 prior to joining Sedgefield. She holds bachelor’s of science and master’s in education degrees from James Madison University, as well as a specialist degree in educational leadership from Florida International University.

Drop Everything and Read
During the month of November, SMS is participating in D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) during advisory time. Our scholars could use your old magazines to peak interest in reading. Please send your magazine donations to the front office for Ms. Goodwin.

Appropriate topics include travel, cooking and technology. Magazine examples include:

  • Time
  • People
  • Highlights
  • National Geographic
  • Better Homes and Gardens
  • Sports Illustrated

Thank you for your donations!
Empowering Extraordinary Dollars at Work: HAC Bags
The PTO recently supplemented Sedgefield's Healthy Active Child (HAC) bags with frisbees, basketballs, footballs and soccer balls, so all SMS scholars have access to fun things to do while enjoying their time outside. Thank you for your Empowering Extraordinary donations, so we can support our students and teachers!

Games Needed for HAC
When inclement weather strikes, our scholars move indoors for HAC (recess) time. You can help keep the fun going inside by donating new or gently used games to play!

Examples of middle-school appropriate games include: playing cards, Uno, Jenga, Monopoly, Sorry, Trouble, chess and checkers.

Please send your donations to the front office to the attention of the PTO; games will be collected in the parent room. If donating gently used games, please ensure all pieces are included.

Club Volunteers Needed - Sign Up Today!
Clubs are a great way for scholars to work with different peers and learn new skills...and a phenomenal way for staff members to build relationships with scholars. SMS is excited to offer over 20 clubs to our scholars! The clubs range from academically-based clubs to sports-related. Scholars will be in the same club for one semester and may choose a new club in January.

We welcome any support from our parents and community members to assist with the clubs. If you are interested, please sign up here . Be sure to include your e-mail and phone number to receive updates. Please note: all volunteers must be cleared CMS volunteers; this must be done on a yearly basis. Click here to register as a CMS volunteer .
It's Okay to Judge (the Science Fair!)
From December 3-6, Sedgefield Middle scholars will flaunt their science know-how at our school science fair. To make this event a sure-fire success, volunteers are needed to help judge project oral presentations.

No science qualifications are needed (you'll be trained prior to judging) and all judges will receive a snack (Pavlovian conditioning, perhaps?) A variety of time slots are available to volunteer, so click here to sign up today. Science fair winners will be announced on December 12 at the Holiday Arts night.
